Most breed pages on this site open with something worrying. This one cannot, honestly, do that.

The Miniature Schnauzer is 17th on the American Kennel Club’s 2025 registration list. On the databases that grade hips, kneecaps, hearts and eyes, it lands near the bottom of every table, which is the good end. A large study of British vet records mostly agrees.

Yet this breed is known among vets for three things, and none of those databases looks for any of them. That gap is what this page is about.

Height is defined, weight is not

Both standards we could open give a height and stop. The AKC standard asks for “From 12 to 14 inches”, then disqualifies “Dogs or bitches under 12 inches or over 14 inches”. The Canadian standard repeats it in metric, “30.5 to 35.5 cm (12 to 14 in)”, with the same disqualification. Neither club prints a weight anywhere.

That leaves the weights in the panel above without a home. Our dataset labels their source “AKC breed standard”, and the standard has no weight clause, so they come from AKC’s separate breed listing. We are flagging our own mislabel rather than quietly fixing it. The row is marked medium confidence, its male-female split derived rather than measured; our methodology page explains how.

Measured dogs sit above it. In 3,857 Miniature Schnauzers under UK primary veterinary care, the average male outweighed the top of the panel’s male range. Read the panel as a show ring’s target, not a census.

Three Schnauzers, three breeds

Poodles and Dachshunds come in sizes the kennel clubs treat as varieties of one breed. The Schnauzers do not. The Miniature, the Standard and the Giant are three separate breeds, which is why only one appears in that top-25 list. The AKC says the Miniature was built from “small Standard Schnauzers, Miniature Pinschers, Affenpinschers, and Miniature Poodles” and recognised it in 1926. Both Schnauzers competed together “until 1945 when the Standard Schnauzer transferred to the Working Group.” The Miniature stayed put. As the breed club puts it, in Europe all Schnauzers are working dogs, but in America “The Miniature has always been in the Terrier Group.” A German farm ratter that America files with the British terriers. Hold that for the behaviour section.

The registry has very little bad news

These are the North American screening figures we hold, from OFA’s breed statistics as of 2 August 2026.

Not one abnormal congenital heart result in 1,252 exams. OFA also ranks breeds by the share graded abnormal, worst first, and on hips this one comes 204th of 219. We publish plenty of pages where that table is ugly, so it is worth saying so when it is not.

It places low on the other three tables too, but we are not printing those placings. We do not hold the number of breeds ranked in any of them, and a placing without its denominator is not a number. OFA lists only breeds that submit, so some tables run to a few dozen.

Two things stop it being proof.

The first is who gets tested. Owners submit voluntarily, and they choose what to send. Paster and colleagues measured that directly. Hip films that looked normal were 8.2 times as likely to be submitted to the registry. So a low percentage from a voluntary database is weaker evidence than it looks. And 324 hip evaluations is a thin base for a breed this popular.

The second is what the exam covers. OFA’s eye scheme is run by board-certified ophthalmologists, but the registry says of its own test that “It is not a comprehensive ocular health examination, but rather an eye screening exam”. It adds that “some early cases of progressive retinal atrophy might not be detected without further testing.”

The independent check comes from British vet records. A random sample of 1,972 of those 3,857 dogs was reviewed over one year. The VetCompass team found periodontal disease in 343 of them, 17.4%; overweight or obesity in 164, 8.3%; anal sac impaction in 114, 5.8%; vomiting in 100, 5.1%; and ear canal inflammation in 99, 5.0%.

Four of those five have an all-dog figure to sit beside; vomiting does not. Two are below it: anal sac impaction against 7.1% in dogs overall, ear inflammation against 10.2%. Two run the other way. Overweight was 8.3% against 6.1%, which the authors say does not amount to a predisposition. And periodontal disease, the breed’s commonest problem by a distance, was 17.4% against 9.3% across all dogs, in the very study those two comparison figures come from.

The authors do not make that comparison, and they have a reason. They line the breed up against dogs of the same size measured the same way: the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel at 15.2%, the Border Terrier at 17.6%. Small dogs get more dental disease. On that yardstick this breed is ordinary, but ordinary is not clean, and this is the one figure that should send you to a toothbrush.

The verdict everyone quotes is the team’s own, from the summary they published alongside the paper. The breed “does not appear predisposed to any common disorders”, and “may be a good choice of breed for many owners”. The paper itself says neither.

Two datasets, broadly one message. Now the part they both miss.

What the screening does not look at: fat in the blood

Triglycerides are the main form of fat carried in blood. This breed carries more of them than other dogs, and the amount climbs with age.

Xenoulis and colleagues measured 192 healthy Miniature Schnauzers and 38 healthy control dogs of other breeds. Serum triglycerides sat above the reference range in 63 of the 192, or 32.8%, against 2 of the 38 controls. Median values were 73.5 mg/dL in the breed and 55 mg/dL in the controls, and the concentration rose with age at a correlation of 0.47.

That is a laboratory finding in healthy animals, not a diagnosis.

A 2024 analysis of lipoprotein profiles opens by reporting that more than 75% of Miniature Schnauzers develop high triglycerides by the age of ten. Its own result complicates that usefully. Sorting 50 dogs (20 normal, 25 with primary high triglycerides, 5 with a secondary cause), it found six distinct profile clusters. So “hyperlipidaemia in the breed” is probably several conditions wearing one label.

The practical part is short. It is a blood test, and the dog must be fasted for at least twelve hours first, as in the diet trials. A sample taken after breakfast tells you little.

Does it do harm?

Sometimes, and the evidence is mixed rather than alarming.

Following 32 Miniature Schnauzers aged seven or over, Smith and colleagues found primary high triglycerides in 18 of them, 56%. Of those 18, 8 had protein leaking into the urine: 44% of the affected subgroup, not of the whole 32. Yet none of the eight had raised kidney waste products or low blood albumin, and eight dogs followed for a median of 18 months did not progress. Kidney damage is a real mechanism here. In this study it stayed silent.

Diet moves the number. Sixteen dogs with high triglycerides were fed a low-fat dry food supplying 18.6 g of fat per 1,000 kcal. Two baseline samples gave median triglycerides of 480 and 493 mg/dL. Two samples on the diet gave 177 and 168 mg/dL. Only 5 of the 16 came fully inside the reference range, so this is a large improvement rather than a cure, from a small trial.

Pancreatitis, and a disagreement worth knowing about

Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, the organ behind the stomach that makes digestive enzymes and insulin. It is what this breed is best known for in veterinary writing, and the two UK datasets we have disagree sharply about it.

An owner survey run through breed clubs and social media collected 4,786 responses and analysed 2,910. Pancreatitis was reported in 220 of those 2,910 dogs, 7.6%. Median age at the reported diagnosis was 4 years. Of the 203 dogs with an age recorded, 35 (17.2% of that subgroup) were diagnosed between one and two years old. That is young enough to argue against a purely acquired cause.

Those same authors note that pancreatitis “was not reported in that primary care study” of vet records at all. Both pictures cannot be right, and they say so. Owners of affected dogs are the likeliest to answer a survey about pancreatitis, and “owners and vets are very likely to differ in their specific criteria for a pancreatitis diagnosis.” Treat 7.6% as an upper bound from a self-selected group.

That survey also warns about owner reports in general. It found hyperlipidaemia in only 1% of all responses, rising to 3.3% of dogs over nine. Set that against the 75%-by-ten figure from American laboratory work. Owners cannot report a diagnosis nobody made. One more finding is worth carrying to a vet: dogs with reported pancreatitis had 4.54 times the odds of a diabetes diagnosis.

Stones

The other thing this breed makes is bladder stones, and here the numbers are large.

The Minnesota Urolith Center analyses stones sent in from across the United States. Of 258,898 submissions between 2010 and 2015, 124,285 were calcium oxalate. Miniature Schnauzers supplied 10,369 first-time formers, 6,322 males and 4,047 females. That put them in the paper’s high-risk group at 8.20 times the odds of hospital admissions generally, on a confidence interval of 7.56 to 8.89. Mean age at the first stone was 8.4 years in males and 8.3 in females. The authors suggest screening at-risk breeds from five or six years old.

Note what that odds ratio is not. It compares the breed’s share of stone submissions with its share of hospital patients, not the percentage of Miniature Schnauzers that get stones.

An older hospital study gets closer. Among 2,077 Miniature Schnauzers seen at one veterinary teaching hospital over eight years, 63 had stones of any type and 20 of those were calcium oxalate. Separately, of 615 Miniature Schnauzer stones sent to the laboratory, 175 (28.4%) were calcium oxalate. So most stones in the breed are something else, usually struvite.

Struvite has a size story rather than a breed story. Across 4,282,027 dogs at 787 US general practices, struvite stones were diagnosed at 36.5 per million dogs per year. That study grouped dogs by size, not breed: toy breeds ran at about 3.0 times the odds of medium breeds, small breeds at about 2.4 times. Its explanation names this one. Miniature Schnauzers “urinate significantly less often and have a smaller urine volume than Labrador Retrievers”, and concentrated urine sitting longer is how crystals grow.

The two halves of this page may connect. Comparing 55 dogs with calcium oxalate bladder stones against 39 without, Paulin and colleagues found high triglycerides in 24% of the stone group and none of the controls. Once they adjusted for age, sex, body condition and how concentrated the urine was, the odds of stones rose 4.34-fold per mmol/L of triglyceride. Miniature Schnauzers were 12 of those 55, so the obvious objection is that the breed drives the result.

The authors tested it, and the answer splits. With the Schnauzers taken out, 19% of the remaining 43 still had high triglycerides against 0% of controls, and the unadjusted odds held at 3.32-fold per mmol/L. The adjusted model did not: 2.00, on a confidence interval of 0.83 to 12.76, which spans 1 and so is compatible with no effect at all. The link survives the simple analysis and dissolves in the careful one. Ninety-four dogs is small, and an association is not a mechanism.

What they are like to live with

One finding belongs in front of every breed description. A 2022 genomics study of 18,385 dogs put breed at only about 9% of the behaviour difference between one dog and another. Nine parts in a hundred is not nothing, and it is not a personality.

Then a gap. The most-cited breed survey of canine aggression, Duffy and colleagues, does not include this breed. We read both of its breed lists: 33 breeds recruited on the web, 11 through breed clubs. No Miniature Schnauzer in either. Anyone quoting that paper at you about this breed is quoting something else.

Two datasets do carry it. A C-BARQ analysis in Serpell and Duffy’s breed chapter covers 7,261 dogs across 30 breeds, scoring each trait from 0 to 4. The Miniature Schnauzer contributes 119 of them. On persistent barking the chapter puts the small and toy breeds above average, then says they are “joined by the miniature schnauzer and Shetland sheepdog, which displays the highest level of this behavior of any of the sampled breeds.” Read that carefully. The top score belongs to the Sheltie; this breed sits above average, not first.

The second is Finnish and larger still. Salonen and colleagues collected 13,715 owner questionnaires across 264 breeds. Fourteen breeds plus mixed-breed dogs cleared 200 responses, and this was one. It does not come out gently. 10.6% were reported as aggressive toward strangers, against 0.4% of Labrador Retrievers. Aggression toward human family members was most common in this breed and the Lagotto Romagnolo, jointly. Along with mixed-breed dogs it had the highest prevalence of aggression overall, on a survey where 14% of all dogs scored in that category. It also showed high social fear, wariness of unfamiliar people and dogs.

Three caveats carry weight. These are owner reports, not observed behaviour. The threshold for “aggressive” counts how often signs such as barking and growling appear, which is a far lower bar than a bite. And the Miniature Schnauzers in that sample were older on average than the other breeds, which matters because pain and failing sight change how a dog reacts.

The same study found the reverse on hyperactivity and impulsivity. Those were least common in Miniature Schnauzers and Rough Collies. A watchful, vocal, not especially frantic dog is a coherent picture, and it is what a ratting farm dog was bred to be.

Growing up

At an adult weight around 20 lb, this breed skips almost all the growth management written for big dogs. There is no long skeletal build-out to slow down. What you get instead is adolescence, which spares nobody.

Asher and colleagues followed 285 dogs (Golden Retrievers, Labradors, German Shepherds and crosses) rated at 5, 8 and 12 months. The interesting result is a disagreement. Carers scored the same dogs lower on trainability at 8 months than at 5. Their trainers, over the same months, scored them higher. A separate group of 93 retrievers took a hands-on version of the test at 5 and 8 months only. That group is where the familiar detail comes from: response to a “sit” command fell only when the dog’s own carer gave it.

So the eight-month-old that ignores you may be ignoring you specifically. No Miniature Schnauzers were in either group, so read it as general.

The Generation Pup cohort shows what owners actually complain about, and for a breed that barks above average it is pointed. Barking topped the list of undesirable behaviours at every age they looked: 7.9% of 1,718 owners at six months, 9.9% of 1,451 at nine, 13.4% of 1,219 at twelve, 11.9% of 823 at fifteen and 10.5% of 684 at eighteen. It peaks at a year, then eases.

Across their life

None of this diagnoses anything. It is a list of things worth raising at a check-up, with the figure behind each one.

Eyes deserve more attention than the registry score suggests. Cataract is common. The UFAW review reports Gelatt and Mackay’s survey of North American veterinary records, in which 1,714 of 34,385 Miniature Schnauzers, 4.98%, had cataracts, plus a later series with a mean age at diagnosis of 5.4 years. We read the review, not the papers behind it. Progressive retinal atrophy is the other problem, and its genetics are unsettled. A 2019 study of 51 affected dogs and 56 controls traced it to a complex change in a gene called PPT1, at an average age at diagnosis near 3.9 years. It also ruled out the marker most commercial tests use, a variant in HIVEP3, absent from four confirmed cases. Six clinically normal dogs aged three to ten carried two copies of the PPT1 change. Neither test is clean yet, so the annual eye exam earns its place.

Myotonia congenita is the one with a settled test. Muscle has to relax as well as contract, and this condition stops it. The University of Minnesota’s canine genetics lab describes affected dogs as having an “uncoordinated, ‘bunny-hopping’ and/or stiff gait with delayed muscle relaxation after exercise”, plus enlarged muscles and sometimes trouble swallowing. The cause is a single letter change in CLCN1, the gene for a muscle chloride channel, catalogued as p.T268M. A dog needs two faulty copies to be affected, and one copy causes no signs at all, so the danger is a pairing of two untested parents. Of 192 dogs on OFA’s register for this test, one carried a copy: 0.5%.

Liver shunts show up before weaning. A congenital portosystemic shunt is a blood vessel that carries blood past the liver instead of through it. Finnish researchers screened 582 puppies from 121 litters with a bile acid blood test and found shunts in 8, or 1.37%. Their comparison figure for dogs generally is 0.18% to 0.76%. Those 582 puppies were 58% of every Miniature Schnauzer registered in Finland that year. All eight ran to the same insertion point on the vein returning blood to the heart: five off the splenic vein, three off the left gastric. That narrow a range points at inheritance.

Fainting has more than one cause here. Sick sinus syndrome is a fault in the heart’s own pacemaker. The Canine Inherited Disorders Database lists this breed first among those affected, females more than males. On treatment it says that “Certain medications may temporarily improve the heart’s rhythm, but virtually all dogs with sick sinus syndrome ultimately require surgical implantation of a permanent pacemaker.” It adds that “The prognosis (outlook for a good life) with a pacemaker is very good.” We could not find a prevalence figure. Degenerative mitral valve disease is separate and later. Of 536 Miniature Schnauzers examined at one referral centre, 69 met the study’s criteria at a mean age of 10 years, and 43.5% of those had fainted, where the leading sign in Yorkshire Terriers examined alongside them was coughing, in 63.1%. A fainting Miniature Schnauzer needs a heart trace, not reassurance.

Blackheads along the back are a breed trait with a name. Schnauzer comedo syndrome blocks the hair follicles over the spine. Reviewing 16 cases across eleven years, dermatologists put it at 0.2% of their skin caseload and 0.04% of the hospital’s dogs. Only two of the sixteen were brought in for it, and 75% of owners had not noticed it. A nuisance, not a threat, unless the follicles get infected.

Diabetes is a fair question with a thin answer. Across 480,469 UK dogs aged three or over, diabetes was recorded in 0.26%. That paper publishes no Miniature Schnauzer figure. The owner survey reported it in 1.1% of its 2,910 dogs, which is the only breed number we found and comes from a self-selected group.

Lifespan. Median age at death was 11.6 years, from 86 deaths, with half the dogs between 9.3 and 13.1 years. Of the 75 deaths with a recorded cause, cancer accounted for 11 and collapse for 10. The team’s own summary sets that beside the rest of the database: “11.7 years, which is similar to the average of 12.0 years for dogs overall”. Same dogs, same method, so that is the comparison to hold. A much larger UK dataset covering 584,734 animals puts median survival at 12.5 years across dogs of every kind and 12.7 for pedigree dogs, but it measures something slightly different: background, not benchmark.

What a breeder should be able to show you

The American Miniature Schnauzer Club lists five tests, and the verb it uses for all five is “recommends”. Two carry no further qualifier: an annual eye examination by a board-certified ophthalmologist, registered with OFA, and a cardiac evaluation. Three are tagged “Optional but recommended”: DNA tests for myotonia congenita, Mycobacterium avium complex susceptibility, and progressive retinal atrophy. Nothing here is compulsory.

Minnesota’s panel adds a fourth DNA test the club does not name: persistent Müllerian duct syndrome, where a male retains female reproductive structures. The lab puts it at roughly a 25% carrier rate and about 2% affected, which would make it the commonest of the four. Ask for the certificates.

What we could not verify

A breed lifespan figure from the big longevity study. Its per-breed table sits in a supplement we could not open, so we used the UK primary-care figure instead.

Whether pancreatitis really affects 7.6% of the breed. One dataset says so; another, built from vet records rather than owners, does not list it at all. We have reported both and picked neither.

Any prevalence figure for sick sinus syndrome. Every source names the breed. None of them counts.

A month-by-month weight chart. The tables circulating online cite nothing. The milestone table above is our own model applied to this breed’s adult weights. Our guide to when puppies stop growing explains what it can and cannot do.

“Miniature Schnauzers need X minutes of exercise.” We found no study behind any figure, in this breed or any other.

Whether they are hypoallergenic. The wiry coat is widely described as low-shedding, which is a different claim in any case. We found no measurement of allergen levels in this breed.

Whether the aggression figure would replicate. One owner questionnaire in one country put stranger-directed aggression at 10.6%. Nobody has repeated it, and the breed is missing from the survey most people cite.

Seven honest gaps beat one confident guess. The registries really are quiet about this breed, and that is worth knowing. But quiet is not clean. The teeth need work, and the three problems this breed is actually known for sit in the blood and the bladder, where nobody looks unless you ask.
