Terms of Use
Last updated
BarkMath (https://barkmath.com) is operated by Michael Evans, London, Ontario, Canada ("we", "us"). By using the site you agree to these terms. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the site.
1. What BarkMath provides
BarkMath provides free informational calculators and written guides about dogs. Access requires no account, no registration and no payment.
Everything here is general information and education. The calculators produce statistical estimates derived from published data about populations of dogs. They are not measurements, predictions or assessments of your individual animal.
2. Not veterinary advice
Nothing on BarkMath is veterinary advice, and using the site creates no professional relationship of any kind. BarkMath cannot examine your dog, does not know its history, and is not a substitute for consultation with a licensed veterinarian. Never disregard professional veterinary advice, or delay seeking it, because of something you read here.
Never use an estimate from this site for dosing or feeding calculations. Medication, anaesthetic and feeding amounts must be calculated from your dog's actual measured weight, by someone qualified to do it. If your dog is unwell, has ingested something it should not have, or is growing very differently from what you expected, contact your veterinarian or an emergency animal poison line immediately.
3. Accuracy, and its limits
We work hard on accuracy: the growth model is calibrated and independently cross-validated, its performance and its failure modes are published on the methodology page, and every factual claim in the guides is checked against a primary source before publication.
That is a standard of care, not a guarantee of correctness. Specifically:
- Estimates carry real and stated uncertainty. Your dog's actual adult size may fall outside any range shown, and the ranges are honest about how wide they are.
- Published source data disagrees with itself. Different reputable breed charts differ by 10–30% on the same breed, which places a hard floor under how precise any tool of this kind can be.
- Some cases are explicitly weaker than others: giant breeds, mixed breeds of unknown parentage, designer crosses, and any puppy under about twelve weeks old. These are flagged in the interface where they apply.
- Veterinary science moves. Content correct when published may be superseded, and we do not warrant that every page reflects the current state of the evidence.
4. No warranty
The site is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the site will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of harmful components, and we may change, suspend or discontinue any part of it at any time without notice.
5. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Michael Evans will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, data, goodwill, or veterinary or other costs, arising out of or connected with your use of this site, or your inability to use it, whether based in contract, tort (including negligence), strict liability or otherwise, and whether or not we were advised of the possibility of such damages.
Our total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to the site and these terms is limited to CAD $100 or the amount you paid to use the site (which is nil), whichever is greater.
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes liability that cannot lawfully be limited or excluded, including liability for fraud, for fraudulent misrepresentation, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence. Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of implied warranties or the limitation of certain damages, so parts of sections 4 and 5 may not apply to you, and nothing here affects the rights you have under mandatory consumer protection law where you live.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use the site in a way that breaks the law, or that infringes anyone else's rights;
- interfere with the site's operation or security, or attempt to gain unauthorised access to any system connected with it;
- extract the breed dataset, growth curves or written content in bulk by automated means for republication or to build a competing dataset. Ordinary reading, ordinary use of the tools, and search-engine indexing are all fine;
- present the site's output as veterinary advice, or as your own professional assessment, to anyone else.
7. Intellectual property
The written content, design, code, growth model and compiled breed dataset are the property of Michael Evans and are protected by copyright. The underlying research is not ours: papers, breed standards and guidelines cited on the site belong to their respective authors and organisations, and are cited under normal academic and journalistic practice.
You may quote us. A reasonable extract, with attribution to BarkMath and a link to the page it came from, is welcome and needs no permission. That is the point of publishing the method. Wholesale reproduction of pages or of the dataset is not permitted without written consent; ask at hello@barkmath.com and the answer is often yes.
8. Third-party links and advertising
BarkMath links to external sources so that claims can be checked. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, accuracy or practices.
The site is free to use and is intended to be supported by display advertising. Advertisements are supplied by third-party networks and are not endorsements by us; we do not select individual ads and have no involvement in the products or claims they contain. Advertising has no influence over what is published. See About. How advertising affects your data is set out in the Privacy Policy.
9. Privacy
Our handling of data is described in the Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms. In short: the calculator runs entirely in your browser and what you enter is never transmitted to us.
10. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The revised version takes effect when posted here, and the date at the top of this page changes with it. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the revised terms; if you do not, stop using the site.
11. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules, and you agree that the courts of the Province of Ontario will have jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them.
If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, this does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory provisions of the law of your country or state of residence, and it does not prevent you from bringing proceedings there where the law gives you that right.
12. Severability and entire agreement
If any provision of these terms is held unenforceable, it will be limited or removed to the minimum extent necessary and the rest will remain in full force. A failure to enforce any provision is not a waiver of it. These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and us about your use of the site.
13. Contact
