This breed climbed from 22nd to 19th on the American Kennel Club’s 2025 registration list. It holds a record no breed wants and a record most would envy, and both sit in the same screening database.

Three to seven pounds, written once for both sexes

The American standard is unusually specific about weight and silent about everything else you might measure. Its whole size clause reads: “Weight - is from 3 to 7 pounds with the ideal weight for show specimens being 4 to 6 pounds.”

Read that twice, because three things follow.

The range and the ideal are different ranges. A 7 lb dog is inside the standard and outside the show ideal. Breeders sometimes talk as though 4 to 6 is the rule; it is the preference.

One range was written for both sexes. The male and female columns in the panel above are ours, not the standard’s. Our dataset splits the published range using the median difference measured across breeds where real weights exist. That is an estimate, and this breed’s row is flagged medium confidence because of it.

The standard gives no height. It sets a shape instead: “The Pomeranian is a square breed with a short back. The ratio of body length to height at the withers being 1 to 1.” Any inches figure you meet, ours included, comes from somewhere else.

Where our own model sits on a dog this small

Toy breeds are a comfortable size for our growth curve and a hard one to audit. The curve was fitted against published charts spanning Chihuahua to Great Dane, and the toy band’s fit error came out at 3.2 percentage points, second tightest of the five bands, behind the large band’s 1.7. Feed the equation on our methodology page an adult weight of 5 lb and the halfway mark lands at about 14 weeks. A Pomeranian is half-grown before it is four months old.

The weakness is the input, not the curve. Our adult weight here is a standard rather than a measurement, and the independent cross-check published on that page covers a band of 27.5 to 47.5 kg. Nothing outside our own work audits a dog this small.

What the surveys measured, and what they skipped

Every breed description runs into the same ceiling. Comparing owner surveys against DNA, researchers found that breed accounts for about 9% of behavioural variation between individual dogs, from 18,385 surveys and 2,155 dogs genotyped. The rest is the dog.

Then there is a specific gap here. The standard breed-by-breed aggression survey built two samples: 11 breeds recruited through breed clubs, and 33 recruited online with a minimum of 45 dogs each. We read both lists row by row. There is no Pomeranian in either. When a site ranks this breed for aggression and footnotes that paper, the footnote is decorative.

What has been measured is size, not breed. A Finnish study of 9,270 purebred dogs across 23 breeds or breed groups asked owners how often their dog growled, snapped or bit, and reported that “Small dogs were more prone to aggressive behaviour than large or medium-sized dogs.” The Pomeranian is not one of the 23, so that statement includes this breed by size rather than by name.

One number from that paper travels badly, so treat it with care. Of its 9,270 dogs, 1,791 sat in the frequent-aggression-toward-people group. But the authors built those 9,270 out of 13,715 by keeping the clearest cases and the clearest non-cases and discarding everyone in the middle. Divide the one figure by the other and what you have measured is that selection, not how many dogs of any breed behave this way.

The half of that finding about the owners

A survey of 1,276 dog owners in Austria split dogs at 20 kg. Owners of the smaller ones called them less obedient, more aggressive and excitable, and more anxious and fearful: each at P < 0.001, meaning the gap is very unlikely to be chance.

Then the survey asked what the owners did. Owners of smaller dogs were more inconsistent and spent less time on training and play, again at P < 0.001. Within that group, consistency and regular training each tracked with better obedience. Punishment ran the other way, going with more aggression and excitability in both size groups and with more anxiety and fear in the small dogs only.

None of that proves the owners cause the behaviour. It does mean the two get measured together, and only one is yours to change.

On barking, which is the stereotype

Nobody has counted barking in this breed. What exists is a British cohort that followed puppies from six to eighteen months and asked owners what bothered them. Barking was the most reported problem at every single time point, rising from 7.9% of dogs at six months to 13.4% at twelve, then easing to 10.5% by eighteen, on samples falling from 1,718 dogs to 684. So barking peaks in the first year across dogs generally. Whether a Pomeranian does more of it than a Beagle is a question nobody has put to data.

The first year

Weight is done early: six to nine months, as the panel says. That leaves the first year mostly about behaviour rather than growth management, which is the reverse of the large-breed problem.

Adolescence still lands. The clearest study of it followed 285 puppies (retrievers, German Shepherds and their crosses) with owner questionnaires at 5, 8 and 12 months. At 8 months, the dogs whose owners reported more distress at being left alone were also rated harder to train by that same owner. The link turned up at 8 months and at neither 5 nor 12, which is what makes it a phase rather than a trait. A separate and much smaller arm of the same project put 93 retrievers through a sit command at 5 and 8 months only. There the odds of the sit being ignored at 8 months were 2.14 times higher when the dog’s own carer asked, while a stranger asking got better compliance. Neither group contained this breed, so take the shape and leave the rate.

The practical version: an eight-month-old Pomeranian ignoring you is normal, and the least useful answer is more pressure.

What to raise at a check-up

Most of what follows comes from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, a voluntary screening registry, and one caveat governs every figure it produces. Comparing films that were submitted against films that were not, normal-looking hips were 8.2 times as likely to be sent in. Screened dogs are mostly breeding candidates. So a bad number here is a floor, and a good one is weaker evidence than it looks.

Kneecaps: first of every breed the registry ranks

A luxating patella is a kneecap that slides out of the groove it should track in. Of 3,481 Pomeranians examined, 1,013 were graded abnormal, 29.1%. No other ranked breed comes higher. Nearly three dogs in ten.

This one is not an X-ray finding. The registry’s exam is done by hand from 12 months of age — “The dog is examined awake (chemical restraint is not recommended)” — and graded 1 to 4. At grade 1 the kneecap “easily luxates at full extension of the stifle joint, but returns to the trochlea when released”. A grade 1 dog may never limp in its life.

Primary-care records find the same thing without the volunteer bias. Across 210,824 dogs at 119 English practices, 1.30% had been diagnosed with patellar luxation, with a confidence interval of 1.21 to 1.39. Then the breed rows:

Those two columns answer different questions and usually disagree. Raw prevalence counts affected dogs, while the odds are adjusted for age, sex and bodyweight. Of the breeds that study reports, this is the one both columns put first anyway. Note how wide its interval runs, 3.9 to 9.2: far fewer Pomeranians sat in those records than Yorkshire Terriers.

Three details from that study travel to the vet. Median age at first diagnosis was 4.0 years, middle half 1.7 to 7.5, so this is not usually a puppy problem. Females had 1.3 times the odds of males. And dogs whose bodyweight sat below the breed-and-sex mean had 1.4 times the odds, which cuts against the idea that lighter is better built.

One more figure circulates and deserves defusing. A Thai study found patellar luxation in 75% of 59 Pomeranians, reporting a male-to-female ratio of 1 to 1.95. Those 59 dogs came from 15 families recruited for a genetics study, a pedigree sample chosen because the problem runs in it. It is not a breed prevalence, and it gets quoted as one constantly.

Watch for a skipping step: one back leg lifted for a stride or two, then put down and forgotten.

Hips: a number that should not be there

410 Pomeranians had hip films read. 77 were graded dysplastic, 18.8%, which puts the breed 58th of the 219 ranked. That is above the Beagle, and only a little below the Golden Retriever and the German Shepherd Dog. For a five-pound dog, it is strange.

We looked for the explanation and did not find a clean one. Here is what we can say.

The sample is thin. 410 hip evaluations against 3,481 patella exams. The registry’s own volumes show which test this breed’s breeders actually use. The 8.2× submission bias above bites hardest when the pool is that small.

Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease would land in that abnormal column. It is the death of bone at the head of the thigh bone when its blood supply fails, and it is a small-breed disease. The registry reads it off the same extended hip film and says so plainly: “Evidence of LCP would be detected during an OFA hip dysplasia evaluation and would yield abnormal results.”

But it cannot be doing much of the work. This breed’s own Legg-Calvé-Perthes record runs to 358 dogs with a 0.3% abnormal rate, one dog. Those are different submissions from different dogs, but a disorder appearing once in 358 cannot account for 77 abnormal hips in 410.

Grading is not adjusted for size. Three independent radiologists read each film and agree a consensus across seven grades. The registry does note that a Fair grade “can be a normal finding in some breeds”, naming the Chow Chow, Chinese Shar Pei and Poodle. Breed-typical build is allowed for, just not for this one.

And this is not only a big-dog disease. The Merck manual calls it “most common in large-breed dogs; however, it can also affect small-breed dogs and cats”. It adds the line that matters most here: “Clinical signs of hip dysplasia vary and do not always correlate with radiographic abnormalities.” A grade on film is not a limp.

The Shih Tzu shows the same pattern on a bigger sample, 21.7% of 1,256, so this is not a Pomeranian quirk. We are leaving it unresolved rather than picking a tidy answer.

Eyes, which is the good news and is also real

2,826 Pomeranians were screened and 1.8% came back abnormal, about 51 dogs. That is 216th of 219 ranked breeds, near the bottom of the table, which here means near the top of the class.

It is the breed’s second-largest screening sample, and it points the opposite way from the kneecap result. The volunteer-bias caveat still runs the same direction, so read it as no signal of an eye problem rather than a guarantee about one puppy.

The coat problem with the honest name

Alopecia X is hair loss that creeps symmetrically across the trunk, tail and thighs while sparing the head and legs, leaving skin that goes dark grey to black. Hence the common name, black skin disease. It does not itch and it does not hurt.

The name is the finding. The condition was called X because “the nature of this condition is currently unknown”, and the older names it replaced (growth-hormone-responsive alopecia, castration-responsive alopecia, pseudo-Cushing’s) were each a guess that did not hold up. Onset is usually 1 to 3 years old, sometimes later.

Researchers compared skin from five affected Pomeranians against four healthy ones and found the Wnt and hedgehog genes that drive the hair cycle switched down in the affected dogs, along with hair follicle stem cell markers. Their conclusion is careful: “the mode of inheritance and the underlying pathomechanism of the impaired hair growth remain to be elucidated,” and the sex hormone explanation “was never proven”. Nine dogs is nine dogs.

A survey of Pomeranian owners in the Netherlands and Dutch-speaking Belgium kept 211 usable replies out of 234 between March 2022 and August 2023, and found that “woolly hair coat type and male sex were identified as risk indicators for developing AX”.

The useful part is that this is a diagnosis of exclusion. Thyroid disease, hyperadrenocorticism, sex-hormone imbalance and parasites all get ruled out first, and those do make a dog ill. So the work-up earns its keep even though the endpoint is cosmetic. Melatonin is the usual first attempt, with partial to complete regrowth in 30 to 40% of dogs, and hair can fall out again despite continued treatment.

The windpipe, and a registry that does not cover it

First, a distinction that trips people up. The screening registry runs a tracheal hypoplasia report, a congenitally narrow windpipe, measured as a ratio on an X-ray and certified at 2.0 or above. That is a flat-faced-breed problem, it ranks only five breeds, and this one is not among them. It is a different condition from tracheal collapse, for which the registry holds no figure at all.

One thing did change in April 2026. The registry opened its breathing exam (the Respiratory Function Grading Scheme, a three-minute exercise test built by the Royal Kennel Club and Cambridge that grades a dog 0 to III and certifies only 0 and I) to thirteen more breeds, this one among them. Before that it ran for Pugs, Bulldogs and French Bulldogs alone, and the older line saying so is still sitting further down the registry’s own page. So a Pomeranian’s breathing can now be graded and recorded. Our screening extract holds no result for this breed under that scheme, which is what you would expect of a report opened to it months ago: a route that exists, not yet a number.

Tracheal collapse is the cartilage rings softening so the airway flattens as the dog breathes. Surgeons call it a “chronic, progressive, irreversible disease” and put this breed second on their short list of those affected, behind the Yorkshire Terrier. Learn the sound: a “harsh dry cough that sounds like a goose honking”, often set off by excitement, heat, or a collar pulling on the throat, and often heard when the dog is picked up.

For scale rather than risk, a Seoul referral hospital reviewed 110 small dogs with tracheal collapse seen between 2022 and 2024. Pomeranians were 25 of them, 22.7%, second only to the Maltese at 34. That describes one hospital’s patients, not a breed’s odds, but four other findings in it travel:

  • Mean age was 11.37 years, and 91.8% of the dogs were over eight. This is an older dog’s diagnosis.
  • A chronic cough was present in 98.1%.
  • Mean body condition score was 5.44 out of 9, with 97.2% at 4 or higher. Weight is the cheapest lever an owner has, and our guide to spotting an overweight puppy explains the score.
  • X-rays confirmed the collapse in only 64.5% of cases. A clear chest film does not rule it out.

Medical management controls up to 70% of dogs, mostly the mild ones. Use a harness rather than a collar from the first walk.

Teeth, because the mouth is the same size as the dog

Our screening extract holds no dentition figure for this breed, so published records do the work. Across 22,333 UK dogs followed for a year, 2,797 were diagnosed with dental disease, one dog in eight. Size drove it hard: dogs under 10 kg carried 3.07 times the risk of dogs of 30 to under 40 kg, and dogs of 12 years or more carried 3.91 times the risk of dogs aged 2 to under 4.

A larger owner-reported survey names the breed. Waltham researchers questioned 12,753 dog owners in the United States and Canada, found periodontal disease in 50.5% of the dogs, and listed the American Cocker Spaniel, Papillon, Yorkshire Terrier, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Pomeranian among the breeds at increased risk. Owner reports are a softer measurement than a vet’s notes, and that figure is about four times the UK one: a different question with a different denominator, not a contradiction. Ask for the mouth to be checked at every visit, and start home care while the puppy still thinks it is a game.

Thyroid: the interesting column is the middle one

254 Pomeranians had thyroid panels registered. 1.2% were abnormal (three dogs) and 11.0% came back equivocal, which is 28. The uncertain results outnumber the abnormal ones nine to one.

The registry defines equivocal as results “that are questionable, therefore not definitive”, and asks for a repeat within three to six months. So one equivocal panel means “test again”, not “borderline hypothyroid”. Hearing the second when a vet said the first is the error this section exists to prevent.

The background rate is low. In 905,553 UK dogs under primary veterinary care, hypothyroidism was diagnosed in 0.23% in a single year, at a median age of 7.65 years, and the Toy group showed lower odds than the study’s comparison group, which was breeds the Kennel Club does not recognise. Heavier dogs carried more risk, not lighter ones: those at or above the mean bodyweight for their breed and sex had 2.06 times the odds.

How long they live

Better than average, and there is a real breed figure, just not a British or American one. Records from eight pet cemeteries in Tokyo, covering 386 Pomeranians among 12,039 dogs, give a life expectancy at birth of 14.0 years, interval 13.7 to 14.4, against 13.7 years for the whole dataset. Within it the breed outlived the Chihuahua at 11.8 and the Toy Poodle at 12.7, and came in under the Shih Tzu at 15.0.

Two limits. These are dogs whose owners chose and paid for a pet cemetery, a self-selecting group, and Japanese pet dogs live differently from British or North American ones.

For the size effect on a much larger base, a US dataset of 13,292,929 dogs seen at over 1,000 practices between 2013 and 2019 put life expectancy at birth at 12.69 years for all dogs and 13.36 years for purebred toys, against 9.51 for giants. It has no Pomeranian row either, which is why the Japanese figure carries the specific work here.

What we could not stand behind

Why the hip figure is what it is. 18.8% of 410 is the measurement. Whether it is hip dysplasia as a large-breed vet would know it, a small-breed variant, or an artefact of who submits films, we could not establish. Legg-Calvé-Perthes is the usual explanation offered, and the breed’s own record for it is one dog in 358.

Any month-by-month Pomeranian weight chart, or any daily exercise figure. The weight charts in circulation cite nothing, and a 3 lb adult and a 7 lb adult cannot share one anyway. The exercise rule is in neither the standard nor anything else we could open.

Three claims about the coat. Breeders describe a scruffy “puppy uglies” phase in the first year; we found no study measuring when it starts or whether it predicts anything, including alopecia X later. Clipping is widely said to trigger alopecia X; we found no controlled evidence either way. And the effect sizes behind the woolly-coat finding sat behind a paywall, so we quote only what those authors summarised themselves.

This breed’s row in the UK hypothyroidism tables. We could read that paper’s headline results but not its full breed tables, so we make no claim that the breed is absent from them, only that the Toy group as a whole ran low.

Any population prevalence for tracheal collapse in Pomeranians. Everything we found counts dogs already referred for it. That gives you the sound to listen for and not the odds.

A temperament ranking from the aggression survey. The breed is in neither of its two samples. We checked every row of both before writing that sentence.
