The Dachshund is now the fifth most popular breed in the United States, up one place and past the Poodle. It is also the dog with the heaviest measured spinal disease burden of any breed on that list.

Both of those things are true, and a person choosing a puppy needs the second one before they commit, not after. So this guide leads with the back.

One breed, two sizes, three coats

The two panels above are not two breeds. They are one breed sold at two sizes, and a full-grown standard can weigh three times what a full-grown mini does.

Start with where those figures come from, because it changes how much weight they carry. The American standard gives one combined range for the larger size, “usually between 16 and 32 pounds”, and no separate figure for males and females. Our dataset splits that range using the average gap between the sexes measured across breeds where real dogs were weighed. So the male and female columns for the standard are a derivation, not a measurement.

The miniature panel is stranger still. The AKC does not treat miniatures as a separate size at all. It treats them as a show class you qualify for, at “11 pounds and under at 12 months of age and older.” That is a ceiling, not a range, which is why both sexes read the same in the panel.

“Miniature” means three different things

Ask a European breeder and you get a different answer again. The FCI standard recognises three sizes, and it ignores weight completely. It measures the chest instead, once the dog is at least 15 months old. Standard males run over 37 cm up to 47 cm. Miniature males run over 32 up to 37. Below that sits a third size the American ring does not have: the Rabbit Dachshund, at 27 to 32 cm for males. Females run two centimetres smaller at every step: 35 to 45, 30 to 35, and 25 to 30.

Britain splits the breed differently again. The Kennel Club there registers six separate breeds (three coats, each in two sizes) and gives the Miniature Smooth Haired its own standard, with an “ideal weight; 4.5 kgs (10 lbs).”

The practical point: a puppy sold to you as a miniature is a forecast. In the US it is a forecast about what the dog will weigh at a year old. Under FCI rules it is a forecast about a chest measurement at 15 months. Neither is settled at eight weeks, and neither is the same test.

What both standards agree on is proportion rather than height. The FCI asks for a body about 1.7 to 1.8 times as long as the dog is tall. Hold on to that number: it comes back below, and it is not decorative.

How often the back actually goes

The plainest figure comes from a 2025 survey of 43,517 US dogs. Across every dog in it, 1.2% had a history of disc disease, 520 dogs. Among Dachshunds it was 15.3%, or 83 of 541. That was the highest lifetime rate of any breed measured.

A UK survey of 2,031 Dachshunds landed almost on top of it: 15.7% had been diagnosed by a vet.

Now the figure that matters more. Both of those count dogs of every age, including puppies who have not reached the risk years yet. Finnish researchers went back to 193 Dachshunds that had reached at least ten, and 31% had shown signs of disc disease.

Handle that one with gloves. Those 193 were not a random sample of the breed. Every one of them had been X-rayed under the Finnish Dachshund Club’s voluntary screening scheme, and owners who sign up for that are not average owners. Only 55% of the owners contacted sent the questionnaire back. Dogs whose owners described back trouble that no vet had diagnosed were excluded from the count, which pushes the figure down rather than up.

A Danish team gives the low end of the range in one line: “Approximately every fifth Dachshund is affected by disc herniation.”

So somewhere between a fifth and a third, depending on how long you wait to count and which dogs you count. That is not a breed quirk. It is the single most likely medical event in this dog’s life.

Why it happens

Dachshunds are chondrodystrophic: a build with short curved legs, and discs between the spine bones that dry out and harden years earlier than in other dogs. A hardened disc can burst upward into the spinal cord instead of bulging slowly. That is why the onset is so often sudden.

The cause is unusually well pinned down for a dog disease. In 2017 Brown, Bannasch and colleagues traced it to an FGF4 retrogene on canine chromosome 12. A retrogene is an extra copy of a gene that got reinserted somewhere new in the genome. That one copy carried an odds ratio of 51.23 for disc disease, with a confidence interval of 46.69 to 56.20, a range that never comes close to “no effect”.

Here is the uncomfortable part. Dachshunds are near enough homozygous for two of these retrogenes, matching copies of each, from both parents. The UC Davis genetics lab puts the frequency of the disc-related copy in Dachshunds at 0.98, and states the consequence flatly: “It is not possible to breed away from this trait within breeds where the mutation is fixed.”

The gene that makes the legs short is the gene that ages the discs early. They are not two problems.

Shape adds to it

Genes are not the whole story. A UK referral hospital measured 700 dogs, 79 of them with a disc extrusion, and found back length relative to height predicted risk strongly on its own. For a Miniature Dachshund, the predicted probability rose from 0.30 at a length-to-height ratio of 1.1 to 0.68 at 1.5. Longer and lower is riskier within the breed, not only between breeds.

Which Dachshunds, exactly

This is where the folklore breaks, though not in the direction most people expect. The UK survey recorded a variety for 1,975 of its dogs, and spread the 310 diagnosed cases across them like this:

Read the ends first. The highest and the lowest are both standards, and they differ more than threefold. Then read the middle, because that is the part the folklore gets wrong in the other direction: second and third place are both miniatures.

So if you have been told the smaller dog is the delicate one, the measured rates do not show that. They do not show the smaller dog is the safe one either. What they rule out is size as the thing that sorts these dogs. Coat and variety sort them, and why a coat should track spinal risk at all is not settled.

One caution on reading that table backwards. An older Norwegian study X-rayed young Dachshunds and found the opposite ranking for hardened discs, with wire-haired dogs worst affected, as UFAW’s review sets out. Hardened discs and diagnosed illness are not the same measurement, and the two rankings disagree. We are reporting both rather than picking the tidier one.

What you can ask a breeder for

There is a real screening scheme, and it is the most useful thing on this page for anyone still choosing a puppy.

The Kennel Club runs it with Dachshund Health UK, adapted from schemes that have run in the Nordic countries for years. A dog is X-rayed once, between 24 and 48 months of age, and the result stands for life. A scrutineer counts the discs that have visibly hardened, and grades the dog 0 for none, 1 for one or two, 2 for three or four, and 3 for five or more.

The grades earn their keep. Of those 193 Finnish dogs followed to age ten, only 9% of grade 0 dogs had shown disc disease, against 64% of grade 3 dogs, odds roughly eighteen times higher. Grade 3 dogs also had frequent periods of back pain.

One mismatch to keep in view. Those Finnish dogs were screened on their own club’s scheme, at a median age of 50 months and anywhere from 12 to 116, not inside the UK scheme’s 24-to-48-month window. The grades are the same grades. The timing that produced them was not.

So ask for the parents’ grades. The scheme cannot promise you a healthy puppy, and the Kennel Club says so itself.

Why the DNA test is the weaker option

A DNA test for that FGF4 copy is sold, and it sounds like the better tool. It is not, for this breed, and the reason is worth spelling out.

Danish researchers genotyped 151 Dachshunds across the three coats. In the long-haired and smooth-haired dogs the insertion was almost fixed: so close to universal that it could not be linked to anything. There was no variation left to test.

Only the 84 wire-haired dogs had enough spread to work with, and there the test flagged every dog whose discs had hardened. It also flagged nearly every dog whose discs had not: a specificity of 0.14, meaning 44 of the 51 unaffected dogs were flagged anyway. Breeding on that result would exclude almost the whole breed and still not sort one dog from the next.

The X-ray score was judged against a harder target, not hardened discs but an actual herniation, and still returned a specificity of 0.91. Dogs with five or more calcified discs carried roughly fifteen times the risk. The authors’ verdict on the alternative: the retrogene insertion “is not a valid risk indicator on its own.”

A test that everybody fails tells you nothing about anybody.

Stairs, sofas and ramps

Every Dachshund owner is handed the same rules: no stairs, no jumping off furniture, buy a ramp. Somebody has now checked, twice, and the results do not support a blanket ban.

In the UK survey, dogs that exercised more than an hour a day had lower odds of disc disease, and dogs exercising under 30 minutes had higher odds. Stairs showed a trend in the direction opposite to the advice, dogs that used no stairs looked slightly worse off, though that did not reach significance. Dogs not allowed on furniture also had higher odds.

The 2025 US survey pointed the same way, independently: more daily active time and regular stair use both went with lower odds.

Read those carefully. The authors of the UK study flag reverse causality themselves, and they are right to: an owner whose dog has already had an episode stops letting it on the sofa. So this is not proof that jumping is harmless. It is good evidence that the lifetime blanket ban has never been shown to help, and that keeping a Dachshund fit and moving is not the risk it is sold as. Ramps have not been tested at all.

Advice after a diagnosed back injury is a different question, and that one belongs to your vet.

Weight is the part that does have support. In that hospital study, each point of body condition score raised the odds of a disc extrusion by 1.62, and 46.2% of the Miniature Dachshunds were overweight. The UK survey found no weight effect, but used a coarser 5-point scale and said so. Given the spine this dog is carrying, the cheaper bet is the lean dog. What they are like to live with

A 2022 study of over 18,000 dogs found that breed accounts for only about 9% of the behaviour difference between one dog and the next. Two Dachshunds can differ more than a Dachshund and a Beagle. Hold that in mind for everything below, including the part you will not like.

In the largest owner survey of breed aggression published, Dachshunds ranked first for aggression toward strangers, in both of the samples the researchers collected. They came first for aggression toward other dogs as well, but only in one of the two samples: online, that spot went to the Akita. The paper’s own summary names them: “Breeds with the greatest percentage of dogs exhibiting serious aggression (bites or bite attempts) toward humans included Dachshunds, Chihuahuas and Jack Russell Terriers”.

Now the caveat that comes with it, and it is a big one. That study ran two recruitment routes. Among 120 Dachshunds reached through breed clubs, 6.7% had bitten or tried to bite a stranger. Among 68 reached online, it was 20.6%. Same breed, same questionnaire, three times the rate. How you find owners moves the answer more than most breed differences do.

A third picture comes from the breed’s own charity. Dachshund Health UK has run an owner survey since 2009, and in 1,067 responses just 2% reported aggression toward people and 8% toward other dogs, while 74% called their dog outgoing and friendly. More owners reported barking (22%) and distress at being left alone (19%) than anything aggressive. That survey is not peer reviewed and breed-club owners are self-selected, but so were the first two.

What we take from all three: barking and a strong opinion about strangers are the traits worth preparing for, and the size of the problem is not settled. This is a dog bred to go underground alone and face something bigger than itself. The American standard asks for a dog “courageous to the point of rashness” and calls shyness a serious fault. Nobody selected for a quiet neighbour.

The puppy year

Here is the good news that comes with being small.

Most of what is written about puppy growth is written about big dogs: the worries about growing too fast, the calcium ceilings in large-breed food, the joint consequences of an overfed six-month-old. Neither Dachshund variety comes close to the weights where that research applies. What replaces it is duller and matters more. Keep the puppy lean, for the spine.

On adolescence, the evidence is general but it holds. Researchers following young dogs found they got harder to train around puberty, and (the odd part) mostly with their own person rather than with a trainer they knew less well. A separate UK study of over a thousand puppies found owner-reported problems peaked at twelve months before falling away. In a breed this vocal, expect the barking to be loudest in that window.

One neutering note, because it is breed-specific. A study of 1,073 Dachshunds found neutered females had 1.81 times the risk of a disc herniation compared with entire females, rising to 2.12 for those neutered before twelve months. Early-neutered males came in at 1.54. The authors relied on owner recall and say so. Take it to your vet as a timing question, not a decision you make alone.

Across their life

These are the things worth raising at a check-up. None of it is a diagnosis.

A sudden back episode is an emergency, not a wait-and-see. Yelping, refusing to jump, a hunched back, wobbling or dragging back legs: all of it is a same-day call. Outcomes depend heavily on how much function is left. In a veterinary review of current management, dogs that were paralysed but could still feel deep pain recovered in about 93% of surgical cases and 62% of conservatively managed ones. Once deep pain sensation is gone, those figures fall to 61% and 10%. That gap is why timing matters.

Lifespan is a bright spot, with a gap in the data. A UK study of 584,734 dogs put the Miniature Dachshund at a median of 14.0 years, against 12.5 across all dogs, and listed it among the breeds least at risk of early death. The standard size was not reported separately, and there is no VetCompass paper devoted to this breed the way there is for Labradors and German Shepherds. So we can tell you the mini lives long. We cannot give you a measured figure for the standard.

Eyes, in the long-haired minis. A form of progressive retinal atrophy called cord1 runs in this variety, and the Kennel Club sells a DNA test for it. Worth knowing what the test does and does not do: 32 of 200 clinically normal Miniature Longhaired Dachshunds carried two copies of the mutation without disease, and 12 of 59 affected dogs did not carry two copies at all. The researchers concluded it is “difficult to predict the dog’s phenotype solely by the presence of the RPGRIP1 insertion.”

Lafora disease, in the wire-haired minis. This is an inherited epilepsy of later life, and it is the clearest success story in the breed. Of 733 Miniature Wirehaired Dachshunds tested, 7.0% carried two copies of the mutation and 31.9% carried one. Between 2012 and 2017, testing pushed the two-copy share from 10.4% down to 2.7%. Ask a wire-haired breeder for this result.

Teeth. Dental disease affects one dog in eight every year in UK vet records, and small breeds dominate the high-risk list. The Dachshund was not among the breeds that study named, so we are flagging it as a normal check-up item rather than a breed finding.

What we could not verify

Month-by-month Dachshund weight charts. The tables on other sites cite nothing. There is no published growth study for either size. The tables on this page come from our own model, run on this variety’s own adult weights: a projection, clearly labelled, not a record of real puppies.

Exercise in minutes. The usual “30 to 60 minutes a day” has no source we could find. The only exercise finding with real data behind it is the UK survey’s, and it runs opposite to the caution people expect: more was better, not worse.

That miniatures are more fragile. We could not find any study showing it. Nor does the variety breakdown above show the reverse. A standard sits at each end of the range and two miniatures sit just below the top, which says size is the wrong question rather than that the answer runs the other way.

A back-length ratio you can check at home. The measurements that predicted risk were taken by researchers to a set protocol. No home threshold has been validated, and we are not inventing one.

Ramps. Widely sold, universally recommended, never tested against disc disease in any study we could open.

Coat type and personality. The breed charity’s survey hints at differences between the varieties. It is a self-selected owner sample and nobody has replicated it, so we will not repeat it as fact.

A cause-of-death breakdown. For several breeds we can give you one from primary-care records. For the Dachshund, that paper has not been written.
