This is the most registered breed in the United States, and has been for four years. It is also the breed where the distance between the sales patter and the veterinary literature is widest.

Measured figure, sample size, and the limit of what each study can tell you. What you do with that is yours.

How big they get

Look at the flag on the panel above. It reads “Breed standard”, and that is not decoration. On our retriever pages the adult weights come from weighing tens of thousands of pet dogs. We went looking for the same thing here and did not find it. So these numbers trace back to the show ring instead.

The American standard sets one ceiling and applies it to everybody: “Weight not to exceed 28 pounds; over 28 pounds is a disqualification.” It never gives a separate figure for males and females. The gap between the two columns above is worked out by our dataset, not copied from any standard.

Height is worth a word, because the standard does not give one. It sets a proportion instead: withers to ground against withers to tail. The 11 to 13 inches you meet on every other site comes from the AKC’s own breed guidance, which says “Frenchies typically weigh under 28 pounds and are about 11–13 inches tall.” That is a useful figure, but it is not the standard, and we would rather point you at where it actually comes from.

The one place this breed makes our job easy

Most of the warnings on this site are about very large dogs. Here they simply do not apply. The largest published growth standards state that they “do not apply dogs with an adult weight >40 kg” (88 lb), and the clumsy wording is theirs. A Frenchie lands at under a third of that.

So the month-by-month table further down sits comfortably inside the size range that research was built and tested on.

There is one reason to watch the scale here that has nothing to do with joints. We come back to it under breathing.

Three published lifespans, and why they disagree

Search this and you will meet 9.8 years, 4.5 years and 3.6 years. All three are real numbers from real UK papers. They differ because of who was counted.

Start with the biggest study. A dataset of 584,734 dogs across 155 breeds puts the median for this breed at 9.8 years, against 12.5 years for dogs generally. Its hazard ratio was 2.2 (95% CI 2.1–2.3), roughly twice the rate of dying at any given age. The same dataset sorted every purebred by muzzle shape. Medium-muzzled breeds reached 12.8 years. Long-muzzled breeds reached 12.1. Flat-faced breeds reached 11.2, on 88,103 dogs and 40,644 deaths. So the shape itself costs about a year and a half, and this breed sits well below even that.

Now the low figures. UK life tables built from primary-care records give life expectancy at birth as 4.53 years (95% CI 4.14–5.01), from 229 dogs, against 11.23 years for dogs overall. A study of 2,228 French Bulldogs gives a median age at death of 3.6 years.

Neither is a mistake, and neither means a Frenchie dies at four. The life-table authors flag the reason themselves. Their French Bulldogs “are biased towards younger dogs that contribute proportionately more deaths in younger ages in the life table.”

Here is the cause, in one figure. Between 2003 and 2013 this breed went from 0.02% to 1.46% of UK puppies born each year. When a population explodes like that, almost every dog in it is young, so almost every death recorded is a young death. The median age of those 2,228 dogs was just 1.3 years.

Our read: 9.8 years is the figure to plan around. It has the largest sample and the least age distortion. Its own weakness is that it pools records from 18 different organisations rather than one clinical database, so the mix of dogs is less tightly controlled than a life table’s.

Breathing, and the parts of it you can act on

Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS, the collapse and crowding of a shortened airway) is the defining health question here. How common it is depends entirely on how you count.

Count what vets typed into a file, and it looks uncommon. Those same 2,228 dogs had BOAS recorded in 2.4% across one year. Measure the dogs instead and it looks nothing alike. Cambridge researchers walked 214 French Bulldogs through a standardised exercise test and found 58.9% affected. A Danish group assessed 69 of them and only three scored completely clear.

For risk against other dogs, 2,781 French Bulldogs were compared with 21,850 dogs of other breeds. BOAS came out at an odds ratio of 30.89 (95% CI 20.91–45.64). Narrowed nostrils came out at 42.14 (18.50–95.99). An odds ratio of 30 means the odds are thirty times higher, not that thirty times as many dogs have it.

The nostrils are the thing to look at

Of the measurements researchers have tried, this is the one that survives contact with real life.

French Bulldogs with moderately or severely narrowed nostrils had 5.65 times the odds (2.65–12.68) of airway disease compared with dogs whose nostrils were open. 75.4% of the dogs measured had them. In the Danish work, nostril grade alone accounted for 32% of the variation in how well a dog breathed. Half of those dogs were graded severe; only 19% were clear or mild.

The breed standard is on your side here. It asks for “Nostrils broad with a well-defined line between them.” Pinched slits are a departure from the written breed, not an expression of it.

The two ratios you will read about

Muzzle against skull. A study of 700 dogs across many breeds found that “BOAS only occurred in dogs whose muzzles comprised less than half their cranial lengths.” Over 80% of the flattest dogs, those under a tenth, were affected. That is a powerful finding about breeds. It is much weaker inside one: in the Cambridge work, this ratio did not separate affected French Bulldogs from unaffected ones. It tells you the breed is at risk. It does not pick your puppy.

Two neck ratios, and they measure different things. The neck girth ratio is neck circumference divided by chest circumference. In French Bulldogs, every 0.01 higher carried an odds ratio of 1.12 (1.05–1.21). The second one is not about the chest at all. It is neck length divided by body length, and every 0.01 lower carried 1.07 (1.01–1.14). Both are real, but the girth ratio failed on repeatability: two people measuring the same dog agreed poorly, at an intraclass correlation of 0.41. The paper reports poor to moderate agreement for most of these ratios. The only cutoff the authors would stand behind, 0.71, was for male bulldogs, not this breed. So treat both as evidence about body shape, not a tape-measure test you run at home.

Bodyweight. Across breeds, being overweight raised BOAS risk on its own. Within French Bulldogs it did not reach significance, and the likely reason is that so few were heavy: 8.4% were obese, and 15% of the worst-affected dogs were actually underweight. Keeping yours lean is still worth doing. Just do not expect it to fix a nose. Our guide to spotting an overweight puppy covers how to judge that without a scale.

A screening scheme you can ask a breeder about

This is the most useful paragraph on the page, so here it is plainly. The Respiratory Function Grading Scheme is run by the Royal Kennel Club with the University of Cambridge, and in the UK it covers three breeds: this one, the Bulldog and the Pug. A trained vet grades the dog from 12 months old, and the scheme says the check “should be repeated every two years for their lifetime, or until you stop using them for breeding.”

It is not UK-only. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals licensed it, so North American breeders can certify dogs too. The two arms differ in one way worth knowing. OFA now runs the exam on a longer list of flat-faced breeds, from the Boston Terrier to the Shih Tzu, but it still issues certificates for only the same three. The grades run 0 to III: grade 0 is “clinically unaffected and free of any respiratory signs”, and grade III is “clinically affected and has severe respiratory signs.” The scheme was launched in 2019 off the back of the Cambridge measurements above.

Ask for both parents’ grades and the date. A breeder who has them is telling you something checkable, which is more than a photograph does.

Two honest limits. Graded parents do not guarantee a clear puppy. And the Danish researchers, looking at how far their own population had to travel, concluded there is “no viable short term solution for reducing the prevalence” in this breed.

Most owners do not spot it

2,168 owners of flat-faced dogs, 741 of them French Bulldog owners, answered clinical questions about their own dog. Nearly 40% of the dogs scored in the range that signals real airway obstruction. Asked outright, only 17.9% of the whole 2,168 said their dog had a breathing problem. That is the share of every owner in the survey, not of the affected 40%. Seven in ten owners rated their dog’s health as very good or the best possible.

That gap is the practical reason to get a grade rather than trust your ear. Snorting and noisy sleep get filed as personality.

What they are like to live with

Start with the ceiling on any breed claim. A survey of 18,385 dogs, 2,155 of them genotyped, found that breed accounted for roughly 9% of the behaviour differences between individual dogs. So a breed page can set expectations. It cannot describe your dog.

Then a gap worth naming. The big cross-breed aggression survey we lean on elsewhere, the C-BARQ comparison of dozens of breeds, does not include this one. It required at least 45 dogs per breed and covered 33 breeds online plus 11 through breed clubs. The French Bulldog is in neither list. The ranking we can give for a Rottweiler simply does not exist here.

What does exist is smaller and newer. An Italian team ran the same questionnaire on 206 French Bulldogs. It runs on two scales, and they are easy to mix up. How often a behaviour shows up is scored 0 to 5, and there attachment and attention-seeking came out highest at 3.54, with energy at 3.03. How severe aggression and fear are is scored 0 to 4, and there aggression toward owners came out near the floor at 0.19, fear of strangers at 0.24. In their summary, the dogs “showed low aggression and fear-related behaviors, high attachment and attention-seeking tendencies, and moderate excitability and trainability.”

Read that with its limits attached. Owners volunteered online, and dogs with diagnosed illness were left out on purpose. So it describes healthy, well-kept dogs.

Owners themselves split in an interesting way. Asked whether they would do it again, 93.0% said yes. That figure pools Pug, Bulldog and French Bulldog owners, and the study found no difference between the three, so there is no Frenchie-only number to give. Asked whether they would recommend the breed to a first-time owner, only 64.6% of French Bulldog owners said yes: below Pug owners at 73.7%, above Bulldog owners at 56.2%. People who love these dogs are more careful about handing one to a beginner than about keeping their own.

One finding sits between behaviour and health. Owners of this breed were more likely than Pug or Bulldog owners to report a sleeping problem. An obstructed airway does not switch off at night.

Growing up

The stretch where they stop listening

Adolescence changes dogs, and it is documented rather than imagined. Two hundred and eighty-five young guide dogs were scored by the people raising them, and trainability slipped between 5 and 8 months as puberty landed. The strange part: at 8 months the same dogs rated higher with trainers who knew them less well. The rebellion has an address.

Owner reports peak at a similar point. In a UK cohort of more than a thousand puppies, the peak came at the 12-month check, where 42.1% flagged something, before easing back.

No French Bulldogs took part in either study, so read both as dog findings rather than breed findings. What is specific here is the collision. Those months land while a flat-faced dog is getting stronger, more excitable and more willing to push itself, and pushing itself is the thing that unmasks a marginal airway.

What growth management means for a small dog

Nothing on this page is about restricting a giant breed’s growth rate, because that whole argument is aimed at big joints. Our month-by-month table applies here without the usual asterisk, since the breed sits well inside the validated size range.

The spine is a different matter, and timing is worth knowing. Vertebral malformations in this breed are present from birth rather than acquired, and where signs appear they usually appear in the first year, though they can start later. So a wobble or a weak back end in a young puppy is a vet conversation, not a phase.

Across their life

Treat this as a list of things worth raising at a check-up. None of it is a diagnosis, and a great many Frenchies never meet most of it.

Birth is the one to plan for before you breed anything. A UK survey covering 22,005 litters across 151 breeds found this breed among only three where the caesarean rate ran above 80%. It came from breed-club members reporting their own litters, so the households in it chose to take part, but a figure that size is not a sampling quirk. In primary-care records, difficult birth carried an odds ratio of 9.13 (5.17–16.13). Among bitches who did reach an emergency clinic in trouble, 48.6% ended in a caesarean, and flat-faced bitches carried 1.54 times the odds (1.05–2.28) of needing one.

The spine. A referral hospital saw 2,846 French Bulldogs over fourteen years. Of those, 533 (18.7%) came in with suspected nerve or spinal signs, and 343 ended up with a confirmed diagnosis. That is 12% of every French Bulldog it admitted. Disc herniation, where the cushion between two vertebrae pushes into the spinal cord, accounted for 45.5% of those 343, at a median age of about four. Two-thirds of the 343 had a problem in the spinal cord itself. Within that smaller group of 222, spinal arachnoid diverticulum, a fluid pocket pressing on the cord, made up 11.3%, and malformed vertebrae 8.6%.

That last figure needs care, because it counts dogs that got ill. Screen the whole breed instead and malformed vertebrae are close to universal. Pulling the imaging studies together, hemivertebrae, wedge-shaped vertebrae that never formed fully, turned up in 78% of 41 dogs, 85% of 105, 93.5% of 62 and 100% of 31. Most caused no signs at all. The reviewers note the link owners rarely hear: “The ‘screw-tailed’ morphology is caused by a variant in the DISHEVELLED 2 gene and has been demonstrated to segregate with thoracic vertebral malformations.” The kinked tail the standard allows and the malformed vertebrae travel together.

Eyes. Corneal ulceration ran at an odds ratio of 4.38 against other dogs. Across 104,233 dogs in England, where 0.80% were affected overall, flat-faced skull shape carried 11.18 times the odds (8.72–14.32) of crossbreds. The authors point at reduced corneal sensation and fewer corneal nerves, plus a wide eyelid opening in a shallow socket. A prominent eye that feels less is a bad combination. Any squint or held- shut eye is a same-day call.

Skin and ears. Ear inflammation was the single most common thing recorded, in 14.0% of dogs in one year, with skin fold dermatitis in 3.0% and pyoderma in 2.7%. Nearly three-quarters (72.4%) had at least one disorder logged that year. Against other breeds, ear discharge came in at an odds ratio of 14.40 (9.08–22.86) and skin fold dermatitis at 11.18 (7.19–17.40).

Heat. Across 905,543 UK dogs in one year, 0.18% of French Bulldogs had a heat-related illness event (95% CI 0.12–0.25). Flat-faced dogs overall carried 2.10 times the odds (1.68–2.64) of medium-muzzled ones. What makes that number matter is what follows it: 14.18% of heat illness events were fatal. This is a small risk with a serious tail, and it is the risk on this page you have the most control over.

Flying. US Department of Transportation figures released in 2010 covered five years and 122 dog deaths on flights. About half involved short-faced breeds, with English Bulldogs at 25 and Pugs at 11 the only breeds in double figures. The AVMA’s own caveat belongs with it: that is a small number set against hundreds of thousands of animals flying each year. This breed is not broken out separately in those figures.

And the things they get less of. The same comparison found reduced odds for several problems, including lameness at 0.26, obesity at 0.30 and retained baby teeth at 0.16. Those are real, and they are the reason this section is a list rather than a verdict.

What we could not verify

Month-by-month French Bulldog weight charts. Every one we opened was unsourced. Our table is model output, not a record of what real puppies of this breed weighed, and we would rather say so than dress it up.

Any daily exercise figure. There is no study measuring how much exercise this breed needs. Given that exertion is exactly what provokes airway signs, a fixed minute count would be worse than useless here.

That a particular line, colour or breeder is “healthy” or “long-nosed enough”. Nothing we found supports this. The muzzle ratio that predicts risk across breeds did not separate affected from unaffected French Bulldogs, and no published work identifies a bloodline as clear. The checkable facts are the individual dog’s nostrils and the parents’ grades.

Neck measurement as a home test. The ratios are genuine. The repeatability of the girth ratio is not. We are not going to hand you a number you cannot measure reliably.

How this breed compares with others on behaviour. The big cross-breed survey never included it. One Italian sample of 206 dogs is what exists, and it excluded dogs that were ill.

Neutering age. We looked for French Bulldog-specific guidance on when to neuter and joint or cancer outcomes, and found none. Ask your vet about your dog rather than about the breed.

Whether the breed is getting better. Grading schemes and published risk figures both exist, but we found no study measuring whether the breed’s average breathing has improved since screening began.
