A lot is known about this breed, because heart specialists have followed Dobermans for decades. That evidence comes with a warning: the disease that matters most here stays silent for years, and a normal check-up does not rule it out. If you take one thing away, take the screening schedule.
The size panel, and the two standards behind it
The figures above are worked back from a breed standard rather than measured from a large group of pet Dobermans. Which standard matters, because there are two of them and they disagree.
The American standard gives height only: “Dogs 26 to 28 inches, ideal about 27½ inches; Bitches 24 to 26 inches, ideal about 25½ inches.” It sets no weight at all. The European standard, written by the FCI and last revised in 2015, gives both. Height is much the same, at 68 to 72 cm for males, but weight is not: it asks for “Males: about 40 – 45 kg”, which is 88 to 99 lb and sits above the whole range our panel shows. For females it asks 32 to 35 kg, roughly 71 to 77 lb, again near the top of ours.
So the “American versus European” argument does have one checkable piece in it: one standard asks for a heavier dog on paper. The rest of it is dealt with at the end of this page.
Height finishes before weight, so a rangy eleven-month-old is usually not done growing. The largest published growth standards state their own limit: they “do not apply dogs with an adult weight >40 kg”, or 88 lb. A female sits well inside that, while a male at the top of the panel’s range sits just outside, so our curve for a big male is an extrapolation.
Behaviour: what has been measured, and what has not
Start with the ceiling on anything anyone writes about breed character. A 2022 study matched 18,385 owner questionnaires against DNA from 2,155 dogs, and breed accounted for about 9% of the behavioural difference between one dog and the next. The other nine tenths belong to the animal and its life, which makes a breed name a weak bet.
Within that limit, this breed does have its own data. The classic C-BARQ aggression survey (the C-BARQ is a validated owner questionnaire) included 144 Dobermans in its 33-breed online sample of 3,791 dogs. Table 4 of that paper counts dogs scoring the top mark of 4: the owner reported snapping, biting or trying to bite.

Read the last row with care: its denominator is smaller because only dogs living with another dog could be scored. For scale across the 33 breeds, the stranger-directed figure topped out at 20.6% in the Dachshund (14 of 68), the owner-directed at 7.9% in the Beagle (5 of 63), and dog-directed reached 29.3% in the Akita (29 of 99). The breed was not in the paper’s separate 11-breed breed-club sample, so it has no second reading there.
The authors name the breed once, about style rather than how often. “Doberman Pinschers, Jack Russell Terriers, West Highland White Terriers, Australian Cattle Dogs and German Shepherds were also more aggressive than fearful towards strangers.” Meeting someone new, this dog steps forward rather than shrinking. Plan the first year around that.
Both standards describe character, and they differ. The American one wants a dog that is “Energetic, watchful, determined, alert, fearless, loyal and obedient”; the European one deliberately asks for “Medium temperament and medium sharpness (alertness)”. Those are statements of intent by a club, not measurements.
The first two years
Adolescence in dogs is well documented, and knowing its shape saves a lot of self-blame.
One British study ran two separate groups. Two hundred and eighty-five young guide dogs (golden retrievers, Labradors and German shepherds) were scored for trainability at 5, 8 and 12 months, and the middle point was the worst of the three. A separate group of 93 dogs, goldens and Labradors only, took a hands-on sit test at 5 and 8 months with no 12-month visit. That smaller group gave the finding people quote most. At 8 months the odds of repeatedly ignoring “sit” rose for the dog’s own carer, at an odds ratio of 2.14, while obedience to a stranger giving the same command improved, at an odds ratio of 0.40. The rudeness had an address.
From the owner’s side, a UK cohort followed puppies to eighteen months, and reports of at least one unwanted behaviour peaked at the twelve-month survey, in 513 of 1,219 dogs, 42.1%. No Doberman is named in either project, so take the timing and not the detail.
Two things here are breed-specific. This is a large breed by our size bands, so the growth cautions in rapid growth and joint problems and large-breed puppy food apply. And the heart screening clock starts inside this window, because the protocol below wants a first Holter and scan at three years.
The heart, which is what this breed is about
Dilated cardiomyopathy, usually shortened to DCM, is a disease of the heart muscle. The muscle thins and weakens, the chambers stretch, and the wiring inside the muscle starts misfiring. Two things can follow. The heart fails and fluid backs up into the lungs, or a misfire turns into a fatal rhythm and the dog dies without warning.
The prevalence figure, and what it is a percentage of
A German-led team ran 775 examinations in 412 Doberman Pinschers, mostly from Germany and its neighbours. The number everybody quotes is 58.2%. Here is how they built it, in their own words: “66 healthy Doberman Pinschers >7 years were compared with 92 dogs with cardiomyopathy (independent of age). Therefore, the cumulative prevalence of cardiomyopathy was 58.2%.”
So the denominator is 158 dogs, not 412. It is a lifetime estimate rather than a snapshot, and the dogs came to a screening clinic rather than from a random sample. It is still the best figure anyone has. Read it as “well over half”.
The age pattern in the same study is more useful, because it tells you when.

The jump sits between six and eight. Before it, about one dog in eight or ten is affected. After it, closer to four in ten.
Why a normal check-up proves nothing here
This part saves dogs.
Of the 92 affected dogs, 73 had no clinical signs at all. They were in what heart specialists call the occult or preclinical phase. The disease is there and getting worse; the dog looks well. Here is how all 92 were caught.

Sit with the first row. Thirty-four dogs had a normal heart ultrasound, and only the 24-hour rhythm recording found them. The second row cuts the other way: twelve dogs had a clean rhythm recording and were caught only on the scan. Neither test replaces the other, and neither is a stethoscope. Heart trouble in many breeds announces itself as a murmur; this one often makes no sound.
The screening protocol, by name
The European Society of Veterinary Cardiology publishes a screening guideline for this breed. It asks for a Holter monitor and an echocardiogram together, starting at three years old and repeated every year for life.

Ventricular premature beats are extra beats fired from the wrong place in the heart muscle. A handful is normal in any dog; hundreds is not. Note that this threshold is stricter than the 100 beats the 2010 prevalence study used. Where to draw the line is a judgement, and it has moved.
What finding it early actually buys
One randomised trial has tested that. The PROTECT study screened about 1,000 Dobermans to find dogs in the preclinical phase, then randomised 76 of them: 39 to pimobendan, a drug that helps the heart squeeze harder and opens the vessels it pumps into, and 37 to a placebo.
Median time to heart failure or sudden death: 718 days on the drug against 441 days on placebo. The hazard ratio was 0.299, with a confidence interval of 0.153 to 0.585, and median survival ran 623 days against 466.
That is about nine extra months, and only a dog caught before it was ill can have them. Seventy-six dogs is a small trial, so the size of the benefit is uncertain, but it is still the entire argument for screening a healthy-looking Doberman.
One number shows how far screening lags. OFA’s advanced cardiac exam holds 4,797 Doberman results and grades just 3.7% abnormal, plus 2.4% equivocal: nowhere near 58%. These are mostly young breeding candidates, seen once, at an age where the prevalence study also found about one dog in ten affected.
The DCM DNA test: read this before you buy one
OFA’s export lists a DNA test for dilated cardiomyopathy in this breed: 1,087 dogs tested: 55.2% normal, 36.2% “carrier” and 8.6% “affected”. The breed ranks first on that test, though we cannot say how many breeds are on the list, and the export does not record which variant was run. Those three labels come from the vocabulary of recessive disease, and they mislead here.
Two variants are involved. DCM1 is a 16-base-pair deletion in the PDK4 gene, found by a genome-wide scan in 2012, and DCM2 is a missense change in titin, the huge spring-like protein inside heart muscle, reported in 2019 in Dobermans that had the disease but not the PDK4 change.
The lab running the test calls the inheritance “autosomal dominant with incomplete penetrance” and states that “not all dogs with DCM1, DCM2, or both mutations will develop disease”. So a “carrier” here is a dog with one copy and raised risk, not a healthy passenger, and an “affected” dog has two copies, a genotype, not a diagnosis. Nothing in that 8.6% says those dogs have heart disease. The same page gives the other half: “Not all Doberman Pinschers with dilated cardiomyopathy have either of these mutations.”
How incomplete is incomplete? A heart specialist writing for the AKC gives the split among 48 Dobermans that had DCM: 58% carried only the titin variant, 21% carried both, 8.3% carried only PDK4, and 12.5% carried neither. She tells breeders to treat the result as one input and keep deciding on “echocardiograms and Holter monitoring”.
Then it gets harder, because the link itself is disputed.
- A UK study genotyped 74 Dobermanns, 44 with DCM and 30 controls, and neither variant tracked with the disease: titin came out at an odds ratio of 0.9 (95% CI 0.45–1.86) and PDK4 at 1.14 (0.47–2.90). A third variant, in RNF207, did associate, at 2.4 (1.07–5.15). The authors warn that breeding on these results “may only result in a more restricted genetic pool”, and say their sample was small.
- A 2024 scan of 46 cases against 3,226 population controls found a new signal on chromosome 16, and reported that it “did not replicate the associations previously identified on chromosomes 14, 36, or 5”, where PDK4, titin and RNF207 live.
So, honestly: the test reports two real variants, but it is a risk marker with weak and disputed predictive power rather than a diagnosis or a clearance. A clear result does not mean your dog will escape DCM, and a positive one does not mean it will get it. The study that would make a clear result reassuring, one showing that clear dogs stay healthy, is the one nobody has done. Screen the heart.
Von Willebrand’s disease: common, and usually mild
This is a clotting problem, and the Doberman is the breed most associated with it. In OFA’s records, 1,934 tested Dobermans came out 58.9% normal, 34.5% carrier and 6.6% affected, which ranks the breed first again.
The type matters. This is type 1, where the clotting protein is normal in shape and simply too scarce; Cornell’s laboratory grades the level as normal at 70 to 180%, borderline at 50 to 69%, and abnormal below 50%. Types 2 and 3 mean a protein that is malformed or nearly absent, and they are far worse. Dobermans get the mild one.
An Australian survey of 614 Dobermans found 373 with levels under half of normal, and of those 373, 107 had ever had a bleeding episode: under a third of the low-level dogs, and 17% of all 614. Most episodes were mild or moderate; eight dogs bled severely and two died.
So a low level is not the same as a bleeding dog. When bleeding does happen it usually follows something that breaks the skin (surgery, a spay or neuter, a dental extraction, an injury), which is why you want the result on file beforehand.
The genotype figures swing wildly with who was tested. The same review reports 26 to 35% homozygous among dogs tested mostly in the USA, against OFA’s 6.6% today. Neither group is a random sample, and the gap runs the way you would expect if breeders have spent years using the test to avoid two-copy puppies. It is a cheek-swab test, so there is no excuse for not knowing.
Other things worth raising at a check-up
The thyroid. This is the breed’s second-best-documented problem. In UK primary-care records covering 905,553 dogs, hypothyroidism sat on the notes of 0.23% of dogs across one year, 2,105 of them. Among the 2,461 Dobermans in that population, 62 carried the diagnosis that year, 2.52%, or eleven times the rate for dogs in general. Adjusted against crossbreds, that was the highest odds ratio of any breed in the study, 17.02 (95% CI 12.8–22.64), ahead of the Tibetan Terrier and the Boxer. Before adjustment it was 15.13 (95% CI 11.5–19.90). Across all breeds the median age at diagnosis was 7.65 years.
OFA’s thyroid panel adds a wrinkle. Of 4,527 Dobermans tested, 82.0% were normal and 4.0% abnormal, but 14.0% came back equivocal, a bigger slice than the abnormal one. OFA calls those results “questionable, therefore not definitive”, asks for a retest in three to six months, and warns that “a negative at any one time will not guarantee that the dog will not develop thyroiditis”. The usual antibody test is also weaker here than in other breeds: UFAW reports that antibodies “are found in only 29% of affected Dobermans, a lower level than in some other predisposed breeds”, and calls antibody screening of normal dogs “too unreliable”.
Wobbler syndrome. The proper name is cervical spondylomyelopathy: the neck vertebrae narrow and press on the spinal cord, producing the wobbly, drunken hind end the nickname describes. Ohio State’s neurology service says the disease is “present in 5.5% of Dobermans”, usually in middle-aged dogs, mean age about 6. Hold that loosely, because the standard review of the condition says no prevalence study has been performed. That review reports something more useful anyway: 25 to 30% of clinically normal Dobermans already show spinal cord compression on a scan without a single symptom. Watch for scuffed nails on the hind feet and a wide, unsteady stance behind.
The liver. Dobermans get a chronic hepatitis tied to copper building up in the liver, and UFAW reports the breed’s odds ratio for it in a UK survey rising from 6.9 in 2001 to 11.5 in 2008 (95% CI 7.6–17.3). Bitches are at higher risk than males, and the median age at diagnosis was 5 years 4 months. In one Dutch study, 22 of 106 Dobermans had liver changes on biopsy, often before they were ill. So raised liver enzymes on a routine panel are worth chasing here rather than rechecking later.
The joints are the good news, and that is worth saying
Most large breeds arrive with a hip problem. This one does not.

Twenty-two thousand hip films is a lot of evidence, and 6.8% abnormal puts the breed in the cleanest third of everything OFA ranks. We cannot say how long the elbow list is, because our copy of that report stops short of the end, so treat 145th as a place without a denominator.
Two cautions come with any registry number. Submission is voluntary and selective: researchers X-rayed a full set of dogs and then watched which films reached the registry, and normal hips were 8.2 times as likely to be sent in, with only 49 of 93 going at all. Counting every dog X-rayed instead pushed dysplasia to 53–73% in Golden Retrievers and 41–69% in Rottweilers. Nobody has repeated that work here, so the real Doberman figure is probably higher than 6.8% by an unknown margin. Grading also happens on film, and plenty of dogs graded dysplastic never limp. Even so, this breed’s joints beat what its size predicts.
How long they live
In UK primary-care records covering 102,609 dogs and 5,095 confirmed deaths, Dobermans had a median longevity of 9.2 years. The middle half fell between 6.2 and 11.0, and the full range ran 2.1 to 13.0. Dogs of every breed in that same dataset reached 12.0 years. So this breed sits close to three years short, compared inside one dataset rather than stitched between two.
The caveat is the sample. That median rests on 37 deaths, few enough that the true figure could sit some way either side. For scale, the largest UK life-expectancy study, 584,734 dogs with 284,734 deaths, puts dogs in general at 12.5 years.
What we could not verify
This breed’s row in the 2024 life-table study. That paper’s main text names only its ten shortest-lived and its longest-lived breeds. The Doberman is in neither. Estimates for the remaining breeds sit in a supplementary file we could not open, so we used the 2013 primary-care figure and said which is which.
That European and American Dobermans differ in temperament. We looked for a study comparing the two populations and found none: only breeder and enthusiast pages asserting it. The standards do differ, and we quoted both. What a club asks for is not a difference measured in living dogs.
Any month-by-month Doberman puppy weight chart. The tables in circulation cite nothing. Ours come from a model fitted to adult weights, which for a big male is working outside its source data.
How many minutes of exercise a day this breed needs. Neither standard says. Nor does any paper we were able to open. Watch the dog, not a clock.
The exact volume cut-offs on the screening scan. The guideline names Simpson’s method of discs as the way to measure the ventricle, but the numbers that split a normal heart from an abnormal one sit in a full text we could not open. Your cardiologist works to them. We are not going to print figures we have not read.
That a DNA-clear Doberman will not get DCM. No study shows it, two later datasets failed to reproduce the variants’ effect, and the result labels borrow words from a kind of inheritance this is not.
Chronic hepatitis survival in this breed. UFAW’s review gives a median of one year after diagnosis, but the study behind that figure was done in Labrador Retrievers. We left it out rather than transplant it.
Anything about children. No study grades any breed for this.
