Labradors have been the most popular dog in much of the world for a generation, which means more has been written about them than almost any other breed, and a lot of it gets repeated rather than checked.
Here is what the research actually supports.
How big they get
The numbers in the panel above come from measuring a large group of real adult dogs, not from show-ring ideals. So they describe the Lab asleep on your sofa, not the one in a breed book.
Height is mostly settled by their first birthday, but weight keeps filling in until about eighteen months as the chest deepens and muscle builds. That is why a one-year-old Lab can look slightly gangly next to a three-year-old of exactly the same height.
The breed’s own American standard agrees, in its way. Its height rules “shall not apply to dogs or bitches under twelve months of age.” The people who wrote it knew a Lab might not be finished at a year.
English versus American Labs
You will hear that English Labs are shorter and stockier, and American ones taller and leaner. There is something real here. It is just not what people say it is.
The genetic split itself is real: a study of 728 UK Labs found the breed separates into distinguishable groups matching the dog’s job: working, show or pet. But that study measured genetics, not bodies. No study has ever measured a size difference between the two types.
And the two breed standards point the other way. The American one allows males up to 24.5 inches. The UK one stops at 22.5 inches and gives no weight at all. If either standard describes a bigger dog, it is the American one.
Why so many Labs are hungry
If yours acts like they have never been fed, that may not be greed. It is probably not your training either.
About one Lab in four carries a deletion in a gene called POMC, which helps control appetite. Dogs carrying it averaged around 4 lb heavier per copy, and scored higher on food motivation, a validated measure of how strongly a dog is driven by food.
A later study of 87 pet Labs filled in the more useful half. Those dogs also burn fewer calories at rest. As the lead researcher put it, they “not only want to eat more, but also need fewer calories because they’re not burning them off as fast.”
What did not change matters just as much. There was no difference in how full the dogs felt after a big meal, and none in how much they seemed to enjoy eating. So this is not a dog who loves food more, or who never feels full. They are hungrier between meals, and thriftier with calories. Portion size and lower calorie food will help. Trying to fill them up at dinner will not.
Keep it in proportion, though. Three Labs in four do not carry it at all, and it was absent from 38 other breeds tested, so this really is a Labrador story. It makes weight harder to manage in some dogs. It does not decide the outcome.
One myth worth dropping while we are here. Labs are not the breed most prone to putting on weight. In UK vet records, Pugs, Beagles, Golden Retrievers and English Springer Spaniels were all more likely to be carrying extra weight. Labs are simply the breed you see most often, because there are so many of them.
What they will actually be like
Here is the finding that should change how you read every breed description, including this one.
A 2022 study surveyed over 18,000 dogs and did genetic testing on more than 2,000. It found that breed explains only about 9% of the behaviour differences between one dog and another. Dogs of the same breed varied almost as much as dogs of different breeds.
Your dog is an individual first and a Labrador second. That is not us hedging. It is the best-supported thing anyone can say about dog character.
The Labrador result in that study is striking. Owners of Labs did describe them as unusually friendly with people: the reputation showed up clearly. But in mixed-breed dogs with Labrador in them, that friendliness did not carry across. Border Collie ancestry did predict biddability in mixes (how readily a dog takes direction), but Labrador ancestry did not predict friendliness.
The one Labrador trait that did carry over to mixes? They tend not to mind getting wet.
What breed does tell you
Not everything is a coin toss. Fetching was the most heritable behaviour in that 2022 study, meaning more of the difference between dogs was explained by genetics than for any other trait measured. Within Labs specifically, fetching was the most heritable trait in a study of nearly 2,000 of them.
So if you want a dog who brings things back, breed genuinely tells you something. If you want to know whether your puppy will be confident with strangers, it tells you almost nothing.
The line matters more than people expect
That same study of 1,978 UK Labs found working-line dogs scored higher on fetching and on trainability than show or pet lines. The authors were careful about why. It could be breeding, it could be that working dogs get more training, and most likely it is both.
The useful version: which line your Lab comes from may tell you more than the fact that it is a Lab. A gundog line bred for drive is not the easiest starting point if you want a calm housemate.
About that friendly reputation
It holds up where people have measured it. In a survey of more than 5,000 dogs across 44 breeds, Labs were named among the least aggressive toward both people and other dogs, alongside Golden Retrievers and Bernese Mountain Dogs.
Two honest caveats. The scores shifted by two to three times depending on whether owners were recruited through breed clubs or online, which means how you ask changes the answer more than the breed does. And “good family dog” has never been tested by anyone, because it is not really a measurable thing.
The strongest evidence is sideways, and it comes from working dogs. Across 7,770 guide dogs followed for twenty years, no breed was more likely to make it to retirement than the Labrador. German Shepherds were seven times more likely to be dropped for fear or aggression. That is not marketing. It is two decades of results from people with every reason to count honestly.
Growing up
The eight-month wall
At some point your Lab may simply stop listening to you.
This is well documented. Researchers following young guide dogs, Labs among them, found they became harder to train and slower to respond at around eight months, as they reached puberty. The part owners find most reassuring: it was aimed at their own person. Trainers the dogs knew less well did not get the same treatment.
A separate UK study followed over a thousand puppies, and owner-reported problem behaviours peaked at twelve months, with about four owners in ten having something to report, before dropping away again.
So if your once-obedient puppy has gone selectively deaf at eight months, and you are the only one it happens to, you are not doing anything wrong, and the evidence says it passes.
What to watch while they grow
Labs are big enough that growth is worth attention. There is unusually good evidence about what helps, because it was done in Labs.
Forty-eight Labs were paired up by litter. One of each pair was fed 25% less than its sibling from eight weeks old. At two years, hip dysplasia had been found in 7 of the 24 dogs fed less, against 16 of the 24 fed freely.
Over their whole lives, hip osteoarthritis showed up in half the group fed less, against 83% of the others, and it showed up far later, at a median of twelve years rather than six.
One correction, because this study gets misquoted constantly. The restricted dogs were fed 25% less than dogs allowed to eat as much as they liked, not 25% less than a recommended amount. The lesson is about not overfeeding. It is not about underfeeding a lean dog.
On neutering, take the numbers to your vet rather than deciding alone. Among 1,933 Labs, joint disorders (dysplasia and cruciate ligament injuries, mainly) turned up in about 6% of dogs left intact, against about 13% of males neutered before six months.
Across their life
These are the conditions Labs face more often than other dogs: useful for knowing what to raise at a check-up, not for diagnosing anything yourself.
Joints are the clearest signal. Compared with other dogs in UK veterinary practices, Labs were nearly three times as likely to have osteoarthritis (the wear-related arthritis that turns up in older dogs), about twice as likely to be stiff, and more likely to go lame.
Ears come up most in daily life. Inflammation of the outer ear canal was the single most common problem recorded, affecting about one Lab in ten in a single year: usually itching, head-shaking or a smell you notice before you see anything.
Weight is the one you can change. Around 9% of Labs were recorded as overweight or obese in a single year. The split by neutering is striking: 11.4% of neutered males, against 4.1% of males left intact.
Lumps under the skin are common, and usually harmless. Labs were about two and a half times as likely to develop lipomas, which are benign fatty growths. Common does not mean ignore it. Any new lump is worth showing your vet, because telling a harmless one from the other kind is exactly the call you cannot make at home.
A word on hip scores. You will see hip dysplasia figures for Labs ranging from under 1% to around 18%. That gap is not a disagreement about dogs: it is a disagreement about who gets counted. Where sending X-rays in is voluntary, owners of dogs with obviously bad hips often do not bother.
Somebody has actually measured that. Researchers followed 200 Golden Retrievers and 140 Rottweilers through hip X-rays and tracked which films were sent to the registry. Normal hips were 8.2 times as likely to be submitted. Once they counted every dog X-rayed rather than every dog submitted, dysplasia ran at 53–73% in Goldens and 41–69% in Rottweilers, far above the published rates for either breed.
Those are not Labrador figures, and we are not going to pretend they are. The lesson is the one that travels: treat any single hip figure with suspicion unless it tells you who was counted. There is more on this in rapid growth and joint problems.
There is also an odd finding about coat colour. In UK vet records, chocolate Labs lived a median of 10.7 years, against 12.1 for black and yellow dogs. A separate study found chocolate Labs scored lower on trainability. Both are single findings, and chocolate is concentrated in certain breeding lines, so the line may be doing the work rather than the colour. We mention it because it is real, not because it is settled.
What we could not verify
Every page here has this section. For Labs the list is longer than most, which is what happens to the most written-about breed in the world.
Labrador puppy weight charts. The month-by-month tables you find everywhere cite nothing at all. The best growth research publishes charts by size group, not by breed. The table above comes from our own model, using this breed’s measured adult weights. You can check how we built it, but it is not a record of what real Lab puppies weighed, because no such record has been published.
Exercise amounts. “Labs need X minutes a day” is on hundreds of pages. It is not in the UK breed standard, not in the American one, and not in any study we could find. The one real finding we did turn up was that Labs walked more showed less fear and aggression. That could easily run the other way, since people walk anxious dogs less.
“Labs stay puppyish until three.” No source. Everything we could check points to a rough patch between eight and twelve months, then settling.
“Labs are especially mouthy.” Believable, given how strongly fetching runs in the breed. But we could not find anyone who has measured mouthing by breed, so we are not going to state it.
Size differences between English and American Labs. Never measured. The one peer-reviewed paper that mentions a build difference does so in passing, citing a popular breed book and a Wikipedia page.
