This breed is now the ninth most registered in the United States, which puts a hunting dog bred for all-day stamina in a lot of ordinary living rooms.
So the first question everyone asks is the right one. How much does one of these need? We went after that figure properly, and what we found is more useful than the number you were expecting.
Where they finish, and how the sexes split
The figures in the panel above come from weighing and measuring live adult dogs. They describe the animal on your kitchen floor rather than a ring winner.
The two national standards are worth putting side by side, because they only half agree. The American one asks for males of 23 to 25 inches and 55 to 70 lb, females of 21 to 23 inches and 45 to 60 lb. The British one gives exactly the same heights in centimetres (58 to 64 for dogs, 53 to 59 for bitches) and then stops. It sets no weight at all.
Compare the panel and you can see where a measured population drifts from an ideal. Real males run a little heavier at the top end than the American standard allows. That is normal. A standard describes the dog a judge wants to see; the panel describes the dogs that exist.
Neither standard says anything about when growth ends, and we found no X-ray study of growth-plate closure in this breed. So take the milestone table below for what it is: our own model, driven by this breed’s measured adult weights.
Field lines, show lines, and the check nobody has run
Ask around and you will be told that field-bred Shorthairs are lighter, wirier and hotter than show-bred ones. It is plausible. It has also never been tested.
The one genomic study of the breed genotyped 34 dogs, 24 in Italy and 10 in the United States. It found more inbreeding than the paperwork suggested: measured directly from the DNA, the average inbreeding coefficient was 0.17, against 0.023 from pedigrees. Pedigrees, in other words, were reading low.
For our question, the interesting part is what did not appear. The Italian and American dogs came out as one cluster, not two. That is not the same as finding no field-versus-show split, because nobody sorted the dogs that way and 34 is too few to see a subtle one. It is simply the only genetic look anyone has had at this breed, and it did not go looking for lines.
Set that against the Labrador, where 728 UK dogs did separate into groups tracking what the dogs were bred to do. Somebody asked that question in Labradors. In Shorthairs, nobody has.
The exercise question, taken seriously
Here is the claim the whole breed rests on, and here is what sits under it.
The Kennel Club’s breed page lists exercise as “More than 2 hours per day”. No source is given, and the figure appears in neither breed standard. It is a kennel club’s recommendation, which is not nothing, and is also not a measurement.
What somebody did measure is what these dogs actually get. A UK survey of 12,314 pedigree dogs across 71 breeds asked owners how long each outing lasted. Among the 107 dogs the paper files under “German pointer”, 101 (94%) went out for over an hour at a time, the highest figure among the breeds the paper singles out, ahead of Dalmatians and Old English Sheepdogs at 89% and Weimaraners at 87%.
Read that carefully. It counts one outing, not a day’s total, and the label covers the German pointing breeds together rather than this one alone. It also describes owners who were motivated enough to fill in a survey. What it does show is that people who take on this breed generally do walk it hard.
The same survey found the gap between advice and practice. Across all 17,028 dogs it covered, 9,025 (53%) fell short of the Kennel Club’s own exercise guideline for their breed. Turn that around and the groups separate. Terriers met their guideline most often, 1,987 of 2,793 (71%). Working breeds met theirs least often, 164 of 863 (19%). Those two figures are shares that hit the target, not shares that missed it.
What actually happens to under-exercised dogs
This is where the evidence gets more helpful than any hour count.
A Finnish study scored 11,539 dogs for hyperactivity and impulsivity: restlessness, and acting before thinking. Dogs getting less daily exercise scored higher. So did dogs left alone for more than eight hours a day.
The authors then do the thing content farms never do. They point out the arrow could run backwards: an owner may walk a difficult dog less, not the other way round. On the hours-alone result they say outright that “the causality can only be speculated”. Everyone was measured once, so nothing here proves that adding a walk fixes anything.
On being left, the honest answer is that this breed has not been studied. A survey of 13,715 Finnish pet dogs found separation-related behaviour in 5% of them, noise sensitivity in 32% and fear in 29%. Breed-by-breed comparisons were run only for breeds with at least 200 responses: fourteen of them, plus mixed-breed dogs. The German Shorthaired Pointer is not one of the fourteen.
What one is likely to be like
Start with the result that should make you sceptical of every breed description, this page included.
A 2022 study surveyed owners of 18,385 dogs and read the genomes of 2,155. Most of what it scored was heritable to some degree. But its own summary is blunt: “Breed explains just 9% of behavioral variation in individuals.” Two Shorthairs can differ from each other about as much as a Shorthair differs from some unrelated breed.
That sits alongside a second finding which sounds contradictory and is not. Across more than 17,000 dogs from 101 breeds, differences between breed averages turned out to be strongly genetic: heritability averaged 0.51 across fourteen behaviours, ranging from 0.27 to 0.77. Trainability landed near the top of that spread, at 0.73.
Both are true at once. Breed averages differ for real genetic reasons, and the spread inside a breed still swamps the gap between breeds. Breed is a decent guide to what a thousand dogs will tend to do and a poor guide to your one.
The aggression ranking that does not exist for this breed
You will find pages ranking the Shorthair on the C-BARQ, a validated questionnaire that asks owners about specific incidents rather than general impressions. Those rankings almost all trace to one 2008 paper. We read both of its breed lists: eleven breeds recruited through breed clubs, thirty-three in the larger online sample. This breed is in neither. Any placing you see quoted for it was made up somewhere along the chain.
What we do have is the standards’ own language, which is aspiration rather than data. The American standard calls the breed “friendly, intelligent, and willing to please”. The British one says “Gentle, affectionate and even-tempered. Alert, biddable and very loyal”, biddable meaning quick to take direction from a person.
Pointing is genetic, and this breed is the odd one out
The freeze on scent is the thing people buy the breed for, and it has been chased down to actual DNA.
Researchers scanned 192 dogs from seven pointing breeds and found a stretch of chromosome 22 that pointing dogs carried in a doubled-up form, holding two genes called SETDB2 and CYSLTR2. Six of the seven breeds carried it consistently, across 166 dogs.
The seventh was the German Shorthaired Pointer. Twenty were genotyped, and they did not follow the pattern: most likely, the authors suggest, because of cross-breeding in the breed’s history. Their conclusion is modest anyway: pointing “likely depend[s] on multiple genetic components”, plus training and environment.
So a Shorthair who points is not running the same piece of code as a Setter who points. And a puppy that never points is not defective.
Growing up
The months where the wheels come off
Somewhere around eight months, a lot of young dogs stop cooperating. It is documented, and the shape of it is oddly specific.
A UK study tested 93 young dogs on a sit command at five months and again at eight. At eight months the odds of repeatedly ignoring it were 2.14 times higher with the dog’s own carer (95% confidence interval 1.46 to 3.11). With a person the dog knew less well, obedience went the other way and improved over the same months.
A larger UK project followed puppies from six to eighteen months. Owner-reported problem behaviour peaked at twelve months, where 42.1% of owners (513 of 1,219) listed at least one. Barking peaked there too, at 13.4%. Both then fell away.
Neither study was about this breed. Adolescence is the best-mapped part of dog development, though, and there is no reason a Shorthair would skip it.
Feeding a large-breed puppy that never sits down
An athletic build tempts owners to feed for the activity. Grow one fast and you buy a problem instead.
The evidence here was built in Labradors, and we will not pretend otherwise. Forty-eight puppies were split into littermate pairs from eight weeks old. One of each pair ate freely; the other got 25% less of the identical food. By two years, hip dysplasia had shown up in 7 of the 24 fed less, against 16 of the 24 fed freely.
Following the same dogs for life, hip osteoarthritis (the joint wear that comes after) reached 50% in the restricted group against 83% in the others, and arrived at a median of twelve years rather than six.
The detail that gets dropped: the lean group was fed 25% below dogs eating as much as they wanted, not 25% below a label. This is evidence against overfeeding, not for underfeeding. There is more in rapid growth and joint problems and in large-breed puppy food, where the point is a calcium ceiling rather than a lower calcium level.
Neutering: the one paper with this breed in it
A US veterinary teaching hospital reviewed 443 German Short/Wirehaired Pointers seen between 2000 and 2020: 150 intact males, 89 neutered males, 90 intact females and 114 neutered females.
Among dogs left intact, joint disorders showed up in 3% of males and 2% of females. Cancers ran at 6% in intact males and 1% in intact females. Females neutered before six months had a joint disorder rate of 38%, which the authors flag as a real difference.
Two cautions come with that. The paper spreads its neutered dogs across four neuter-age bands, so each band is a slice of those 89 or 114 dogs and the counts behind a single percentage are small. And a teaching hospital sees referred cases, which is not the same population as a first-opinion clinic. Take the paper to your vet rather than acting on it alone.
Across their life
None of this diagnoses anything. It is the list worth raising at your next appointment, with the measurement behind each item.
Hips and elbows look genuinely good. Across the North American screening database from 1970 to 2015 (1,056,852 hip and 275,129 elbow records over 60 breeds), this breed was one of four with hip dysplasia in under 4% of the dogs evaluated, and one of seven with elbow dysplasia in under 1%.
Treat that as a floor, not a rate. Sending the X-ray in is voluntary, and somebody has measured what that does. Of 93 dogs X-rayed for certification, only 49 films were submitted, and normal ones were 8.2 times as likely to be sent as abnormal ones. Screening figures are always the good news half of the story.
The parent club recommends five checks. The breed’s health testing list covers a hip evaluation, an elbow evaluation, a cardiac exam, an ophthalmologist’s eye exam, and one DNA test, for cone degeneration. That list is what to ask a breeder for by name.
Cone degeneration is day blindness. It comes from the CNGB3 gene and is recessive, meaning a puppy needs two copies to be affected. Signs appear between 8 and 12 weeks, as bright light becomes uncomfortable and daytime vision fades. Vision in dim light stays normal, which is why it is easy to miss at home. A DNA test settles it before breeding.
One skin disease is close to this breed’s own. Exfoliative cutaneous lupus erythematosus strips the coat in scaly, crusted patches and can end in painful joints. Researchers genotyped 544 German Shorthaired Pointers and found a change in a gene called UNC93B1 that tracked the disease almost exactly: 23 of the 24 affected dogs carried two copies, and none of the 520 unaffected dogs did. It is recessive, and there is a test. Note what that means in practice: the test exists, and it is not on the parent club’s recommended list.
Bloat: the honest version. Gastric dilatation-volvulus is the stomach swelling and twisting, and it kills quickly. In a case-control study of 1,934 affected dogs at twelve veterinary teaching hospitals, this breed came out with 4.6 times the odds of a mixed-breed dog. Odds, not incidence: the study compared dogs who already had it with dogs who did not, so it cannot tell you a yearly risk. For scale, the Great Dane’s figure in the same list was 41.4.
The one study that followed healthy dogs forward and counted new cases enrolled eleven large and giant breeds, and this breed was not among them. So no incidence figure exists for it. Learn the signs anyway: a swelling belly, retching that brings nothing up, sudden pacing and distress. That is a same-hour trip to a vet.
Cancers, and the neuter link. In the teaching-hospital review above, males neutered before six months had mast cell tumours in 8% and haemangiosarcoma in 8%, against 2% and 1% respectively in intact males. Females neutered before a year had lymphosarcoma in 11%. The same small-subgroup caution applies: these are slices of 89 neutered males and 114 neutered females at one referral hospital.
What we could not verify
This section is on every breed page here, and on this one it carries the headline claim.
“They need X hours a day.” There is no study behind any version of that sentence. The Kennel Club’s “More than 2 hours” is a recommendation with nothing cited; the 94%-over-an-hour figure above is a count of what owners give, not a test of what dogs need. Nobody has run the experiment where you vary a Shorthair’s exercise and measure the outcome. The nearest real evidence is the hyperactivity association, and its own authors say the causality is speculation.
How long they live. The biggest UK longevity study covers 584,734 dogs and 155 breeds, but its per-breed medians sit in a supplementary table we could not open, so we are not quoting a number we did not read. The UK life-table project publishes 18 breeds and this is not one of them. The Kennel Club’s “Over 10 years” cites nothing.
Lymphoedema. This gets listed as a breed problem constantly. The published evidence we could find is one dog: a one-year-old male with a swollen muzzle, written up in 2023 as the first case of lymphoedema confined to one side of a dog’s face. A single case report is a long way from a breed predisposition.
Any field-versus-show difference. Not in size, not in temperament, not in energy. The comparison has not been published.
The month-by-month puppy weight chart. Every one you find online cites nothing. Ours at least tells you where it came from: our published growth model, run on this breed’s measured adult weights. It is not a record of what real Shorthair puppies weighed, because no such record exists.
“Not a first-time-owner dog.” We think it is sound advice. We could not find anyone who has measured it, so we are flagging it as opinion rather than dressing it up as a finding.
