The Poodle finished sixth in the AKC’s 2025 registration ranking. That one place on the list covers three dogs that share a name and little else about daily life. So this page keeps the sizes apart wherever the evidence allows, and says so wherever it does not.
One name, three very different dogs
The American breed standard separates the varieties by height and nothing else. The Standard is “over 15 inches at the highest point of the shoulders.” The Miniature is “15 inches or under,” down to a floor just above 10 inches. The Toy is “10 inches or under.”
That is the whole official difference. Not build, not character, not job. A tape measure at the shoulder.
The standard never gives a weight at all, which matters for the panels above. The Standard Poodle figures come from a measured population of 114,568 young adult dogs across 72 breeds. The Miniature and Toy figures come from the AKC’s published breed weights instead, so they carry a weaker label. The male–female gap shown for those two is derived by our dataset, not counted in real dogs. Only the Standard’s sex difference was measured.
Britain does not even file them together. The Kennel Club publishes a separate standard per size, and the Standard’s size line reads simply “Poodles (Standard): over 38 cms (15 ins)”. One country calls this one breed in three varieties. The other calls it three breeds.
The growth curves are not the same shape
Our model reads adult weight and bends the curve to match. So the three tables below the prose are three different projections, not one chart rescaled.
A Standard hits half its adult weight at about 19 weeks. A Miniature gets there near 16 weeks, a Toy near 14. By six months a typical Toy is about 77% of the way to its adult weight, a Miniature about 73%, a Standard about 67%. The Standard is still adding weight through the back half of its first year, which the other two have largely finished.
That gap may be the most useful thing here for a new owner. A Standard puppy is a large-breed puppy and needs raising like one. A Toy is not, and does not.
Are the three varieties one gene pool?
People assume the sizes are one population that was pulled apart by breeders and could be pushed back together. The measurements disagree, at least for the two sizes anyone has compared.
Researchers at UC Davis typed 24 short repeat markers, chunks of DNA that vary a lot between individuals, across 20 chromosomes in 100 Standard Poodles and 48 Miniature Poodles. Miniatures held more diversity. A separate and larger set of dogs was typed for immune-system haplotypes, and there both varieties shared one major haplotype while differing in the rarer ones. Their verdict was blunt: the two “are in fact distinct breeds that are as distant from each other as many other random breed pairings.”
Hold one caveat against that. Thirty-three of the hundred Standards were recruited because they had sebaceous adenitis. So the Standard sample is not a random draw from the variety.
The Standard’s own gene pool is narrow. A study of 761 Poodles, mostly American Standards, found the breed’s variation stacked into a corner: “30 % of the diversity in 70 % of the dogs.”
Two honest limits. The Toy has never been part of a published three-way comparison. And nobody has asked why the sizes differ at the gene level. Across dogs generally, seven markers near genes including IGF1, a growth-signalling gene, explain 46 to 52.5% of the size gap between breeds, measured in 500 dogs from 93 breeds. Whether the three Poodle varieties carry different versions of those markers appears to be unpublished.
What they are actually like to live with
Start with the ceiling on all breed description, this page included. A 2022 study surveyed 18,385 dogs and genotyped 2,155 and found breed accounts for roughly 9% of the behaviour difference between one dog and the next. Two Poodles differ from each other nearly as much as a Poodle differs from anything else.
That said, the trainability reputation is not baseless. In the same study, biddability, how readily a dog takes direction, came out among the more inherited traits measured, at 30.5% heritable, give or take 8.5. Correct for population structure and it falls to 20%. So a trait like that does travel in families. What nobody has done is rank Poodles on it against other breeds.
The variety difference everyone asserts and nobody measured
You will read that Toys are highly strung, Miniatures busy, Standards the calm one. We went looking for the study. There is not one.
The most cited breed behaviour dataset, Duffy and colleagues, covered 3,791 dogs across 33 breeds in its online arm. Poodles appear once, 169 of them, under a footnote reading “Includes standard, miniature, and toy varieties.”
The pattern held up eighteen years later. A 2026 study of 9,402 dogs had 927 Poodles and knew exactly which variety each one was: 352 Miniature, 315 Standard, 260 Toy. It merged them anyway, “to maximise statistical power.”
So the honest position is that the varieties may well differ, and no one has counted. Treat variety personality claims as folklore with good manners.
That study matters for a second reason. It also set the Poodle crosses now outselling them against both parent breeds. Cockapoo against Cocker Spaniel and Poodle, Labradoodle against Labrador and Poodle, Cavapoo against Cavalier and Poodle: twelve behaviour scales each, 72 comparisons in all. The crossbreeds came out worse on 44.4% of those and better on 9.7%.
Read that as a doodle finding rather than a Poodle one. A Poodle is a parent in only half the comparisons; the rest are against Cockers, Labradors and Cavaliers. It is still the closest thing to evidence anyone has produced. The size side of that choice is in how big Goldendoodles get.
The kennel clubs describe a wish list, not a measurement. The American standard asks for a dog “carrying himself proudly, very active, intelligent.” The British one says “gay-spirited and good-tempered”.
The first eighteen months
Somewhere around puberty, a well-mannered puppy often stops cooperating. Researchers following young guide dogs found them slower to obey around eight months, and pointedly, they saved it for their own caregiver rather than for trainers they knew less well. A UK study tracking over a thousand puppies found owner-reported problems peaking at twelve months, then easing.
Nothing there is Poodle-specific. It is worth saying anyway, because a Standard in that phase is a 40 lb adolescent and a Toy is not. The same behaviour lands very differently in the house.
Growth advice that applies to one variety only
A Standard is large enough that how fast it grows matters. Feeding a big-breed puppy to grow flat out is the part owners can influence, and there is good trial evidence behind it, laid out in rapid growth and joint problems.
For Miniatures and Toys, most of that advice is simply not addressed to them. The controlled-growth trials, the calcium ceilings in large-breed puppy food, the warnings about letting a puppy get heavy too young: all of it was worked out in dogs many times their size. A 12 lb adult does not carry the load that produced those findings. Ignoring big-dog growth rules is the right call for a Toy, and we would rather say that than let the advice leak sideways.
Neutering is one place where the three varieties actually were counted separately. A study of 35 breeds covered 238 Toys, 199 Miniatures and 275 Standards. In Toys, joint problems turned up in 4% of intact males and in none of the intact females. Miniature males neutered between six and eleven months reached “a significant 9 percent occurrence of joint disorders.” In Standards the flag was cancer instead. Among males neutered at one year, “the occurrence of one or more cancers rose to a significant 27 percent.” These are single-hospital numbers. Take them to your vet rather than treating them as a rule.
Health, size by size
None of what follows is a diagnosis, and none of it is a reason to expect trouble. It is a list of things worth naming out loud at an appointment, or asking a breeder about before you commit.
Addison’s disease, the Standard’s signature risk
Hypoadrenocorticism (the adrenal glands stop making enough of the hormones that manage salt, sugar and stress) is uncommon in dogs generally. Among 905,543 dogs in UK vet records, 177 cases turned up in a single year, a prevalence of 0.06%.
Standard Poodles were the standout. The breed comparison rests on the 72 cases with a laboratory-confirmed diagnosis, not on all 177. Against crossbreeds, those dogs gave the Standard Poodle 51.38 times the odds of the disease, with a 95% confidence interval from 14.49 to 182.18: wide, because the disease is rare, but nowhere near including “no effect.” Labradoodles came second at 7.40.
Hold both halves of that. The relative risk is extraordinary. The absolute risk is still low. What makes it worth your attention is that the early signs are boring ones: low energy, off food, vomiting, a dog who seems mildly unwell on and off. In a Standard Poodle, that is a reason to say the word Addison’s out loud.
Some of it may come down to inbreeding rather than one gene. In the 761-Poodle study, “both SA and AD were concentrated among the most inbred dogs, with genetic outliers being relatively disease free,” and no marker beyond inbreeding itself predicted either disease. Note the design: it recruited affected dogs on purpose, so the case counts inside it are not a prevalence.
Sebaceous adenitis, and a scheme you can ask about
Sebaceous adenitis is an inflammation that destroys the small glands producing the skin’s own oil. Coats go dull, scaly and thin, usually along the back and neck.
There is no DNA test. Gene-hunting work has been done, but the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals records that “to date, the gene or genes involved in the development of SA in the Standard Poodle have not been identified.”
What exists instead is a skin biopsy scheme, and you can shop with it. A minimum of two 6 mm punch samples are taken from the neck. Because the disease can start later in life, OFA advises retesting breeding dogs every one to two years. Ask a breeder for the result and its date.
Know its limit before you lean on it. Dogs can be affected on a slide while looking perfectly normal, and a clear result means only “that the skin biopsies examined showed no evidence of the disorder”, not that the dog is clear.
Bloat in Standards
Gastric dilatation-volvulus, where the stomach fills with gas and twists, is a surgical emergency. Standard Poodles were one of eleven large and giant breeds followed in a study of 1,637 dogs, where 6% developed it over the study. Risk rose with age, with a first-degree relative who had had it, with fast eating and with a raised bowl.
A 2026 analysis of the Dog Aging Project found the same disease tracking with Poodle breeds, with bigger body size and with male sex. It did not track with the type of food a dog ate, or with anxiety. We could not get past the journal’s paywall to the numbers underneath, so we are not quoting any.
So: know the signs — a swollen belly, unproductive retching, sudden restlessness. And ask your vet about a preventive gastropexy, which tacks the stomach in place during another operation.
Eyes, and the one test that gives a clean answer
Progressive retinal atrophy is a group of inherited diseases that kill off the light-sensing cells at the back of the eye, ending in blindness. The form that runs in Poodles is progressive rod-cone degeneration, and it is caused by a single letter change in the PRCD gene. It is recessive, so a dog needs two copies to go blind and one copy does nothing visible.
That combination (one gene, recessive, testable) is why this is the easiest risk on the page to shop for. The test covers Poodles of every size.
How common is it? In 200 Toy Poodles genotyped in Japan, 33 were carriers (16.5%, roughly one dog in six), and one was affected. That is a mutation frequency near 0.09, about one gene copy in eleven. The authors judged that high enough to be worth a formal breeding programme. Ask for both parents’ prcd results, not one.
Knees, hips and teeth in the small varieties
Kneecaps. In 2,048 puppies from nine common Japanese breeds, 20.3% had a luxating patella, a kneecap that slips out of its groove. Rates ran from 2.1% to 38.1% by breed, and “Toy Poodles showed the highest prevalence rates.” Littermates of a puppy graded 2 or worse carried 16.2 times the risk.
Now the awkward part, which we are not going to smooth over. In 210,824 dogs in English vet practices, patellar luxation ran at 1.30% overall, and eleven breeds had raised odds: Pomeranian at 6.5, Chihuahua 5.9, Yorkshire Terrier 5.5, French Bulldog 5.4, and seven more small breeds. No Poodle variety is among the eleven, and none appears in the paper’s breed tables at all. One study screened puppies in breeding kennels; the other counted dogs whose owners brought them to a vet. They are measuring different things, and we cannot reconcile them for you.
Hips. Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease is the death of bone in the head of the thigh bone, from a failed blood supply. The OFA lists Poodles among roughly two dozen toy and miniature breeds affected, “most often… between the ages of 4 months to a year.” It causes limping and pain in a young dog. A hip X-ray read from twelve months of age is the screening step, and it is another thing a breeder can show you. We found no population study giving a rate for Poodles specifically.
Teeth. This one has a number and it is a big one. Across 22,333 UK dogs, 12.52% were diagnosed with periodontal disease in a single year. The Toy Poodle had the highest odds of any breed: 3.97 times crossbreeds, 95% confidence interval 2.21 to 7.13. Its raw prevalence was 25.97%, better than one in four, though that is third, behind the Greyhound at 32.21% and the King Charles Spaniel at 30.14%.
Those two rankings are not the same thing. The odds are adjusted for age and bodyweight; the raw prevalence is not. Both of those drive dental disease hard, so the order changes once you account for them. Daily brushing from puppyhood is the boring answer, and it is the right one.
How long they live
Small dogs outlive large ones, and that gap should run inside this breed. In 584,734 UK dogs, small females reached 12.8 years and small males 12.7, against 12.0 and 11.8 for large females and males. A Toy or Miniature would be expected to outlast a Standard by about a year on that basis.
An earlier study of 102,609 dogs, with 5,095 deaths, put median longevity at 12.0 years overall and gave the Miniature Poodle 14.2 years. Take that one gently: it rested on 20 dogs.
We could not read per-variety figures out of the larger paper, so treat the one-year gap as the size effect, not as a Poodle finding.
The hypoallergenic claim, measured
Poodles are sold as hypoallergenic more insistently than almost any other breed. Two studies have tested the idea. Neither supports it.
Dutch researchers sampled coats and homes across four breeds marketed as hypoallergenic: Poodle, Labradoodle, Spanish Waterdog, Airedale. They compared them with Labradors and other control dogs, 196 dogs against 160. What they measured was Can f 1, the main dog allergen. The hypoallergenic group carried more of it, not less. In hair the geometric mean was 2.26 micrograms per gram against 0.77. In coat samples it was 27.04 against 12.98.
Read those four numbers carefully, because they are pooled. The paper reports all four hypoallergenic breeds as one group, and never publishes a Poodle on its own. So nobody can tell you from this how a Poodle compares with a Labrador. What the authors do say is flat: “There is no evidence for the classification of certain dog breeds as being ‘hypoallergenic.’”
A US team went at it from the other end. They tested house dust and tried four different definitions of which breeds count as hypoallergenic. No definition made any difference: “no classification scheme showed that the level of dog allergen in homes with hypoallergenic dogs differed from other homes.”
None of that says a Poodle coat is like a Labrador’s to live with. A coat that holds shed hair instead of dropping it does leave less on the sofa. But less loose hair is not less allergen. An allergic person should meet the individual dog before deciding.
What we could not verify
Month-by-month weight charts by variety. No published record of what real Poodle puppies of each size weighed exists that we could find. The three tables below come from our own model, run on each variety’s adult weights. You can check how it was built. They are projections, not observations.
Exercise in minutes per day. Not in either breed standard, not in any study we could locate, and the figures circulating for each variety trace to nothing.
Any temperament difference between Standard, Miniature and Toy. The two largest datasets that could have answered it both pooled the varieties on purpose. Confident claims about which size suits which household are, at present, invention.
Where Poodles rank for intelligence or trainability. The famous ranking is one author’s survey of judges, not a controlled measurement, and we could not find a peer-reviewed study placing Poodles against other breeds on either.
How common sebaceous adenitis actually is. We found no prevalence with a real denominator. The best study recruited affected dogs deliberately, which tells you about inbreeding but cannot tell you about frequency.
The size of the Dog Aging Project bloat signal. That paper’s title tells you Poodles came out high, and we have said so. The journal would not serve us the full text, so its prevalence and case counts are off this page rather than repeated from an abstract we could not read.
A primary-care study of this breed. Several popular breeds have one, a paper built from vet records describing what that breed turns up with. We could not find one for any Poodle variety, so everything above is assembled from studies that happened to include them.
Lifespan by variety. Expected, on size. Not demonstrated, on Poodles.
