Ask whether your dog is a large breed and you will get a confident answer. Ask twice and you may get two different ones.

It is a fair question to ask. The category shows up on food bags, in vet advice about when to neuter, and in guidance about joint problems. It sounds like a technical term. Someone must have defined it.

We went looking for who. The short version: no one body owns the term. Several have written a number down for their own purposes, those numbers run from 44 to 70 pounds, and the organisations you would expect to have settled it have not tried.

No kennel club attaches a number to it

We read the governing documents of five kennel clubs. Not one of them defines “large breed” with a weight or a height.

The AKC sorts breeds into seven groups: Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding. Those describe the job a breed was built for. Herding dogs move livestock. Terriers went underground after vermin. The Royal Kennel Club in Britain, the Canadian Kennel Club, the FCI and the UKC all do the same thing with slightly different group names.

The Toy Group is the one that sounds like a size class. It is not quite. It is the only group picked by size rather than job, but it has no weight limit and no height limit, and there is no Large Group to balance it.

Two clubs do hand out size labels, and both are worth seeing. The Royal Kennel Club tags every breed in its A-to-Z as Small, Small-Medium, Medium, Medium-Large, Large or Extra large. The AKC’s breed-search tool offers a filter with buttons marked XSmall through XLarge. Neither publishes a single number for what any of those words mean. Six rungs on a ladder with no measurements on it.

We checked two more AKC documents to be sure. The show rulebook divides breeds by group and nothing else. The guidelines the AKC gives breed clubs for writing a standard set out ten required sections, one of which is “Size, Proportion, Substance”. That section takes inches at the shoulder and, where it matters, pounds. There is no field for a size category, because there are no size categories.

There is one AKC number, and it is worth being straight about. A care article puts large breeds at “roughly 45 to 90 lbs”. That is consumer advice rather than governance: it appears in no rulebook and no standard. The word “roughly” is the AKC’s own. It also agrees with nobody else on this page. Its ceiling of 90 lb sits below where several other schemes say “large” even ends.

Where the numbers actually come from

Real numbers do exist. They come from four places, and those places disagree.

The spread runs from 45 to 70 pounds. The top figure is more than half again the bottom one. A 50 lb dog is a large breed to one of these and a medium dog to another, and both are being perfectly reasonable within their own document.

The AAHA guidelines are worth a closer look, because they are the most-cited veterinary source here. They give two classes only: “Small breeds: under 45 lbs projected adult bodyweight” and “Large breeds: 45 lbs or more”. No medium. No giant. And the threshold sits inside a box about when to neuter: it is doing one specific clinical job, not defining the term for general use.

Then there are the two numbers that carry legal force. They are the only ones here that do, and they disagree by more than 25 pounds.

The first is a labelling rule. US pet food may carry a nutritional adequacy statement covering “growth of large size dogs (70 lb. or more as an adult)”. It comes from AAFCO, the association whose model regulations individual US states adopt into their own statutes, which is what converts a trade recommendation into enforceable labelling law. It is why large-breed puppy food means something specific while “large breed” on its own does not.

The second binds owners rather than manufacturers, and it is nowhere near 70 lb. The Landeshundegesetz is the state dog law of North Rhine-Westphalia, a German region of some eighteen million people. It defines a large dog as one that reaches, when fully grown, a withers height of at least 40 cm or a weight of at least 20 kg. That is about 44 pounds. Crossing it obliges the owner to register the dog with the authority, demonstrate competence and reliability, have the animal microchipped, hold liability insurance, and keep it leashed on public streets in built-up areas. Twenty kilograms is a Border Collie. In that jurisdiction it is also a large dog with a statutory paper trail attached.

So the two thresholds with actual teeth are 44 lb and 70 lb. They are written for different purposes in different countries, which is a perfectly good reason for them to differ, and precisely why neither settles the general question.

Some bodies decline to give a number at all. The WSAVA Global Nutrition Toolkit, the most widely distributed veterinary nutrition resource in the world, contains no size classification. Neither does the readable portion of FEDIAF’s guidelines. Both still use the phrase.

The brands disagree with themselves

You would expect the pet food companies to be consistent, since they are selling against the line. Three of the four we checked contradict their own pages.

Royal Canin’s size guide sets large at 25 to 44 kg and giant at 45 kg or more, then converts those to 55–97 lb and 99 lb or more. Read it literally and there are dogs the scheme cannot describe: nothing can weigh 98 pounds, and nothing can weigh 44.5 kg. A dog of exactly 25 kg is both medium and large, because the bands are printed touching at both ends.

Purina publishes three different floors across its own properties. Its article says 56 lb. Its Pro Plan large-breed food is sold to dogs “weighing 50 pounds and over”. The Purina Institute’s size classes put it at 50 lb, and the Institute’s own large-breed feeding page says 55. Three numbers, one company.

The sharpest one is inside Hill’s. Its Labrador breed page says the maximum height for a male “puts them in the medium-size dog category, but their sturdy build can make them seem much larger”. Its large-breed food is for dogs “with an ideal weight of 55 - 110 lbs”, a range that contains every Labrador there is, including the males Hill’s own breed page puts at 65 to 80 pounds. One company, one breed, both answers.

So is a Labrador a large breed?

Here is the sentence we did not expect to find. The AKC breed standard for the Labrador Retriever opens like this:

The Labrador Retriever is a strongly built, medium-sized, short-coupled, dog

Medium-sized. We read the whole document. The phrase “large breed” does not appear in it anywhere.

The AKC then contradicts that elsewhere. Its Labrador breed page hedges to a “medium-to-large dog”. Its large-breed care article names the Labrador as an example of one.

There is a real reason the answers scatter, and it is not just sloppiness. The same standard that says medium-sized gives the weights as 65 to 80 pounds for males and 55 to 70 for females, and the AKC’s own weight chart lists the breed as 55 to 80 pounds. That range straddles almost every threshold in circulation. A 55 lb female is large to Hill’s and Royal Canin, and medium to Purina’s article and to AAFCO. An 80 lb male is large to everyone — including, awkwardly, to the AKC care article, which would call every male Labrador large while the AKC’s own standard calls the breed medium.

The same breed classifies differently depending on the sex of the dog. That is not a flaw in the breed. It is a flaw in asking a yes-or-no question about a continuous quantity.

Where we put the line, and why

We class the Labrador as large, so it is only fair to show our working.

Our size classes are the Purina Institute’s: toy up to 12 lb, small to 20, medium to 50, large to 100, giant above that. We borrowed a scheme rather than inventing one, and the scheme we borrowed comes from a pet food company. We would rather say that than imply we derived it.

Two decisions inside it are ours. We classify on the heavier sex, not the average of both, because the class carries the growing-up window we publish, and under-warning the owner of a slow-maturing big dog is the more costly mistake. And a breed has to pass a boundary to move up, not merely touch it. Weight standards are written in round numbers, so breeds land exactly on 50 and exactly on 100 constantly. A Rottweiler at exactly 100 lb is the top of large, not the bottom of giant.

For the Labrador, our dataset puts males at 62 to 75 lb, a midpoint near 68, which lands the breed in our large class. Those figures come from measured population data rather than from the breed standard, which is why they sit a little below the standard’s 65 to 80. Under AAFCO’s 70 lb rule the same dog would not be large at all. Both answers follow their own rules correctly. That is the point of the whole page.

Our growth model never reads the class at all. It is a smooth function of adult weight, so a 51 lb dog and a 99 lb dog get different curves instead of sharing one. The label is for the reader. The number does the work.

The category was tested once, and it broke

The strongest evidence that the familiar scheme is shaky comes from the people who tried to build on it.

Researchers building growth charts for dogs started with the conventional toy, small, medium, large and giant classes, and the fit went wrong. Their report is worth quoting exactly: the model residuals (the leftover error after fitting) “for the medium size class were strongly bimodal, with the subpopulations corresponding to breeds <15kg and breeds >15kg”.

Bimodal means the data has two peaks instead of one. So the medium class was never a single population of dogs. It was two distinct populations sharing a label, with the seam running straight through the middle of the category at 15 kg. The Rottweiler, they added, “fitted poorly and was excessively influential”, one breed distorting the whole large class.

So they threw the words away. Their replacement scheme uses six numbered categories, I through VI, with no names attached.

They are not alone in dropping the vocabulary. A study of 905,552 dogs in UK primary care banded them in plain 10 kg steps and never said “large” once. The Dog Aging Project used five unnamed weight bands. A 2020 neutering study invented a sixth category it called “Standard”, sitting between medium and large, which we have not seen anywhere else.

When people actually measure dogs, the familiar words stop being useful.

The one place the words are defined properly

Two kennel clubs do publish a numeric “Large”, but only in agility.

The FCI defines Large as dogs measuring 48 cm or more at the withers, the ridge between the shoulder blades. The UK Kennel Club uses over 500 mm.

Notice what those are doing. They classify a dog, by measuring it on the day, to decide how high it jumps. They do not classify a breed. Two Labradors a centimetre apart go in different classes, and neither result says anything about Labradors.

What is actually true underneath

None of this means size does not matter. It matters a great deal, which is exactly why the vague category survives.

Bigger dogs grow for longer. Adult weight is the best single predictor of skeletal maturity, the point at which the growth plates close and the bones stop lengthening. That relationship is real and measurable. Calcium during growth is genuinely riskier for big puppies, which is the specific hazard the 70 lb labelling threshold exists to manage. And bone cancer risk climbs steeply with size. In that 905,552-dog population, the 331 confirmed cases of osteosarcoma had a median adult bodyweight of 33.04 kg, against 13.95 kg for the dogs without it. Those are medians rather than averages, and the distinction matters here: the distribution of dog weights is right-skewed, meaning a minority of very heavy dogs drags the average upward while leaving the midpoint where it is.

Every one of those relationships is a slope, not a step. Nothing happens to a puppy when it crosses 55 pounds. The risk curve does not care where a food company drew its line.

So the question worth asking is not “is my dog a large breed”. It is “what will my dog weigh as an adult”, because that number feeds every decision the category was standing in for. If you want it for your own puppy, that is what our calculator estimates, and it shows you how much to trust the answer.

What would change this answer

If AAFCO revised its 70 lb figure, the only binding number would move. If a body with real reach (WSAVA, or AAHA in a future edition) published a general definition and others adopted it, a standard would exist for the first time.

And someone could simply measure the problem. Nobody has.

What we could not verify

Some of this we could not finish, and it would be dishonest to imply otherwise.

We went looking for a study auditing how inconsistently dog size is classified, across the main veterinary and biomedical databases (PubMed, Europe PMC, PLOS, Frontiers, MDPI, Wiley, Springer, Cambridge and others) and in the grey literature of theses and conference abstracts. We found none. That is a striking gap for a category used throughout veterinary nutrition, surgery and epidemiology. But say it carefully: several of those searches were blocked by the databases rather than returning empty, so the honest claim is that we could not find such a study, not that none exists.

FEDIAF publishes growth curves split by mature-weight band, which would give us another set of boundaries. The PDF defeats text extraction past page 36 and the annex begins at page 43, so we could not read the full set of bands in any of four editions we tried. The NRC’s requirements volume is served as page images we could not read either.

A 2000 study of bloat is widely quoted as the source of a 45 kg giant threshold, including on Wikipedia. We could not confirm that definition in the text we could reach, and the accessible portion of the companion paper selects dogs by a list of breed names rather than by weight. We have therefore left that figure out of the table above rather than repeat a number we could not check.
