“Don’t neuter him early or he’ll stay small” is one of the most repeated pieces of dog advice going, and it is backwards.

The confusion makes sense. Two studies ask two different questions, and their answers sound as though they clash, until you notice they were not measuring the same thing.

Almost every article online picks one of these and stretches it to cover “size.” That is where the myth begins.

Why early neutering makes dogs slightly taller

A dog’s legs lengthen at the growth plates: the soft zones near the ends of the long bones, where new bone is added. The veterinary name for them is physes. Once a plate ossifies, meaning it hardens into solid bone, that bone has finished and adult height is fixed.

Sex hormones are part of the signal that tells a plate to close. Neutering removes that source, so surgery before the plates close delays closure. The long bones carry on lengthening past the point they would otherwise have stopped.

Today’s Veterinary Practice sums up the orthopedic research this way. The timing of plate closure “is controlled, in part, by gonadal hormones, particularly estrogen, in both sexes.” And gonadectomy (the surgical term for neutering, in either sex) before those plates close “is associated with significantly greater final length of associated long bones.”

The original work is Salmeri and colleagues (1991), which measured skeletal growth in dogs neutered at a range of ages. Closure came later, and bone length came out greater to match.

So the direction is the opposite of the folklore. Early neutering does not produce a smaller dog. If anything it produces a slightly taller one, with a little more leg.

The effect is modest, though: a small difference in leg length, not a dog of another size.

Why weight barely moves

Salt and colleagues (2017) built veterinary growth standards from over six million weight records, and asked specifically whether neutered dogs needed separate charts.

They did not. Neutering did shift the growth trajectory (upward if performed before 37 weeks, downward after), but the shifts were under one centile, and never large enough to cross neighbouring centile lines. A centile line marks where a dog sits against others its age. The WALTHAM charts that came out of the work are validated for use in neutered and intact dogs alike.

A slightly longer-limbed frame carrying much the same weight is a coherent result rather than a contradiction.

The timing question that actually matters

If size is not a good reason to time the surgery, what is?

Growth plate status. In a mid-sized dog the last major plates close at around 10 to 13 months. Those are the distal radius and ulna (the far end of the two forearm bones) and the proximal humerus, the top of the upper foreleg. In very large and giant breeds they can remain open to 18–20 months. Neutering before or after that window is the real fork in the road, and it bears on the joints far more than on height. Risk by breed and by sex. Research over the past decade associates early neutering in some large breeds with higher rates of cruciate ligament rupture (the knee ligament dogs commonly blow out) and hip dysplasia, a badly fitting hip joint. But the effect varies substantially between breeds, and between males and females of the same breed. There is no single correct age.

Everything else. Mammary tumour risk, pyometra (a womb infection that can kill), prostate disease, roaming and behaviour all enter the decision, and they do not point the same direction.

This is a talk to have with your vet, who knows your dog’s breed, sex, size and household. What it is not is a decision about how big your dog will be.

Where the size myth probably came from

A myth this durable usually has something real behind it, and this one has three.

Neutered dogs do often look different. Body composition is the balance of muscle to fat. It shifts after neutering, giving a softer outline and less muscle showing. A dog that reads as less impressive gets remembered as smaller, even on the same frame.

People compare the wrong dogs. Working and show dogs are often kept intact, and they are also picked for size and kept in hard condition. Comparing the neutered pet Labrador down the road with a field-trial Labrador is not a test of neutering.

Very early spay and neuter did once have a genuine association with poor outcomes in some shelter settings, where the puppies were often underweight, carrying worms or malnourished. Blaming the small adults that resulted on the surgery, rather than on the setting they came from, is an easy mistake.

None of that survives a controlled measurement. Radiograph the bones and early-neutered dogs come out slightly longer-limbed.

What to actually ask your vet

Since size is not the useful question, here are the ones that are:

  • “When do you expect this dog’s growth plates to close?” This anchors the timing to something physical in the dog rather than to a date on the calendar.
  • “For this breed and sex, what does the joint disease evidence look like?” The research is genuinely breed- and sex-specific. A recommendation for a female Golden Retriever does not transfer to a male Rottweiler, or to a small terrier of either sex.
  • “What are the risks of waiting, for this dog?” Delaying is not free. It carries its own trade-offs: unwanted litters, mammary tumour risk in females, roaming and marking. These weigh differently in different households.
  • “How should I change feeding afterwards?” This is the change you will actually see in your dog, and the one owners are least often given a number for.

A vet who knows your dog can weigh those against each other. An article cannot, including this one.

The weight gain everyone actually notices

There is a real effect here that people are picking up on. It just gets pinned on the wrong cause.

Neutering lowers a dog’s energy requirement. Feed the same portions after surgery as before and the dog gains weight. Not more frame, more fat. That is a feeding adjustment, and a simple one. Owners are rarely given a figure, though, so it is worth reading how far a neutered dog’s calorie requirement really drops, and how widely the published estimates disagree.

Adjust portions in the weeks after surgery, then monitor body condition rather than the scale alone. You should be able to feel the ribs under a light press and see a waist from above.

What this means for predicting adult size

Our puppy size calculator applies no adjustment for neuter status, and that is deliberate rather than an oversight.

The weight effect measured in the largest available study is smaller than the honest error bars on any size prediction. Attaching a number to it would imply a sharpness the evidence does not support. We would rather leave it out and say so than tune the model on an effect too small to see at this resolution.
