Few breeds get argued about this much on so little data, and readers arrive already sure of something. So this page does one narrow thing. It reports what has been measured in Rottweilers, who measured it and how well. Where nobody has measured, it says that instead.

How big they get

The panel above is built from weighed dogs, not from a breed book. A typical male lands near 100 lb and a typical female near 83 lb. Height runs about 22 to 27 inches at the withers (the ridge between the shoulder blades, where dogs get measured).

Height finishes first. Chest and muscle keep changing afterwards, which is what owners mean when they say their dog filled out in its second year.

The line where the evidence stops runs between the sexes

Growth research has an edge, and this breed sits on it. The largest published growth standards state that they “do not apply dogs with an adult weight >40 kg.” That is 88 lb. The clumsy wording is theirs.

Now put the two sexes either side of it. A typical male, at about 100 lb, falls outside the tested range. A typical female, at about 83 lb, falls inside it.

So the honest line is not that our model is shaky for Rottweilers. The female numbers rest on validated research; the male ones rest on extrapolation, a curve stretched past the last dog it was checked against. That tells you which of your two dogs to trust the number for.

Is it a giant breed?

Owners ask this constantly, usually while standing in a pet food aisle. On the only definitions with authority behind them, no.

The FCI standard calls the Rottweiler “a medium to large size” dog. The American standard says “medium large.” Neither uses the word giant.

Our own dataset agrees, and only just. The male midpoint lands on exactly 100 lb, the boundary itself. We call the breed large, because a dog ought to have to pass a line to be moved past it, not merely touch it.

For the food question that argument is beside the point. What triggers large-breed puppy formulas is an adult weight of 70 lb, and both sexes clear it easily. Owners of females often assume the guidance is aimed at the boys. An 83 lb female is well over the line.

What they will actually be like

How much a breed name can tell you

One 2022 study put 18,385 owner reports next to DNA from 2,155 dogs. Across the behaviours it covered, breed explained about 9% of the differences between one dog and another.

One line in that paper matters more here than the headline does. The researchers measured what they call agonistic threshold: how easily a dog is provoked by something frightening, uncomfortable or annoying. It turned out to be one of the traits least tied to breed. In their words: “breed is almost uninformative.”

That cuts both ways, on purpose. It does not clear this breed and it does not convict it. It says the label on the dog is a weak guide to that particular thing.

What has actually been measured in Rottweilers

The big breed comparison of dog aggression used the C-BARQ, a questionnaire owners fill in about their own dog, checked against how dogs behave. Two groups were collected: 1,553 dogs through breed clubs, and 3,791 online.

Rottweilers scored above the middle for aggression toward strangers in both. How far above depends on which group you read: breed-club dogs averaged 0.84 on that scale, online ones 0.55. Same questionnaire, same breed, different way of finding owners.

The counts are easier to hold on to. Of 210 Rottweilers in the online group, 10 (4.8%) had snapped at, bitten or tried to bite a stranger at least once, against 2.3% of Labradors and 1.1% of Golden Retrievers. Toward other dogs, 16 Rottweilers, or 7.6%, had done so.

From the same table: 176 of those 210 dogs, 84%, had done none of it, to anyone. A page that prints one of those numbers and not the other is selling you something.

What your vet writes down

UK veterinary records give a bigger view and a different one. A study of 5,321 Rottweilers among 455,557 dogs at 304 clinics found aggression at the top of the list of things recorded for this breed, in 7.46% of dogs, ahead of excess weight and ear infections.

Males were recorded more often than females, 9.36% against 5.47%. Among females, the figure was higher in neutered than entire dogs, 7.5% against 3.1%, while in males, neutering made no difference at all, 9.6% against 9.0%.

The authors then argue with their own number, which is the reason to trust them. Owners of “larger, powerful dogs” are likelier to report a problem and ask for help, they write, because the risk of injury is greater. Vets, trainers and behaviourists may hold “deeply ingrained beliefs” about which breeds are aggressive, and those “may colour their interpretations of certain behaviours.” Negative media stories, they add, may prime the public to see the breed as “more dangerous” than others.

So the figure counts what got written into a file. It is a number about Rottweilers, their owners and their vets at once.

Why nobody can hand you a bite rate

Ranked lists of biting breeds cannot honestly be built, and the reason is arithmetic rather than politics. A rate needs a bottom number: how many dogs of that breed are out there. Nobody has it. As the C-BARQ authors put it, “the total number of dogs of a given breed in the local community is seldom known”, so how far a breed is over-represented in bite reports “is usually undetermined.” They add that most bites go unreported unless someone needs treatment, and that the breed named on a report often cannot be checked.

What the laws have achieved

Ireland restricts eleven breeds by name, and the Rottweiler is one of them, alongside the German Shepherd and the Doberman.

One Irish study compared 140 bite incidents from a national survey: 40 from restricted breeds, 100 from breeds not on the list. It found “no significant difference” between them “for medical treatment required following the bite”, and none in the type of bite. The authors argued for judging dogs “based on their exhibited behaviour” instead of by name.

Hold that lightly. It is 140 self-reported incidents, and it measures how bad the bites were, not how many happened. We looked for a study showing that adding a breed to such a list, or dropping one, changed the number of bites in a country. We found none.

The thing that did move the numbers

Dutch breeders tried something testable. From 2001 to 2009, a Rottweiler pedigree required the parents to pass a socially acceptable behaviour test.

Researchers later asked 822 Rottweiler owners to fill in the C-BARQ. Dogs with that pedigree showed fear and aggression related behaviour at about one in six. Rottweiler look-alikes, bred outside the scheme, came in at about one in three.

Read it carefully. It compares two groups at one moment, not one population before and after, and buyers who choose a tested line may differ in other ways too. Take it as suggestive. It is still a finding about Rottweilers, from Rottweilers, which most claims about this breed are not.

Growing up

The adolescent dip

Adolescence shows up in the research as a dip, not a new personality.

In a study of young guide dogs, 93 of them were slower to sit on command at eight months than at five. That test stopped at eight, so it says nothing about twelve; what recovered by twelve was the trainability score carers gave a larger group of 285. The useful detail is that it was personal. Dogs “responded less to the ‘sit’ command during adolescence, but only when the command was given by their carer, not a stranger.”

A separate UK project followed puppies to eighteen months. Owners reporting at least one unwanted behaviour peaked at twelve months, at 42.1%, then dropped.

Neither study was done in Rottweilers. We would rather say so than pretend the breed-specific work exists.

Elbows, not hips

Ask about joints in a big breed and everyone thinks hips. Here the elbow number is worse, and it is the one that deserves to be better known.

Two separate datasets:

  • An analysis of the full North American screening database, covering more than a million hip and 275,000 elbow evaluations across 60 breeds, put the Rottweiler at 20.1% dysplastic hips and 38.1% dysplastic elbows. That elbow figure is among the highest of any breed there.
  • A South African screening programme covering 1,148 Rottweilers found 22% dysplastic hips and 39% dysplastic elbows, close agreement from a completely separate population.
  • The live North American registry, current to August 2026, now holds 108,893 Rottweiler hip evaluations at 21% dysplastic and 27,302 elbow evaluations at 39%. Three datasets, two decades apart, landing within a point or two of each other.

That elbow figure puts the breed third of every breed the registry ranks, behind only the Chow Chow and the Bulldog, and both of those are built nothing like a Rottweiler, which makes this a working-dog problem rather than a flat-faced one.

So elbow dysplasia is close to twice as common as hip dysplasia here, which is the reverse of what most owners expect. The South African data also shows what screening can do: elbow dysplasia there fell from 54.7% in the 1999–2006 group to 39.1% in 2007–2015, and to 27% by 2015, under mandatory breeding rules.

One caveat covers all such figures. Screening is voluntary in some schemes, and an owner whose dog has visibly bad elbows often does not send the films in. These numbers more likely understate the problem than overstate it.

Do not aim for a big one

Rottweiler culture prizes a heavy dog. The evidence points the other way.

In UK primary-care records covering 905,552 dogs, dogs at or above the average weight for their own breed had 1.65 times the odds of osteosarcoma (bone cancer) compared with dogs below it. In the same study the extra risk once pinned on being male vanished once weight against breed average was allowed for. Some of what looked like a sex effect was a size effect.

The finding sits inside the breed, not between breeds. Pushing a growing Rottweiler toward the top of the range is not a health strategy.

When to neuter

This is a decision to make with your vet, holding the figures. In 854 Rottweilers, joint disorders (hip and elbow dysplasia, cruciate ligament tears) affected 8% of intact males and 16% of intact females. Females spayed before six months came in at 43%, and males neutered between six and twelve months at 22%. Cancers did not rise with neutering at any age.

Hence the current suggestion: males beyond a year, females beyond six months. Joints are doing the work in that advice, not cancer.

Two to three years to mature?

Every Rottweiler growth page repeats it. We went looking for a source and found none, only consumer sites with nothing attached.

The veterinary literature says something else. Most growth plates close between 4 and 12 months, depending on the site and the breed, with the last big ones around 10 to 12 months in an average-sized dog. Giant breeds can run to 15 to 18 months. The 2021 AAHA nutrition guidelines put it at “closer to 15–16 mo” for some large and giant breeds. Most dogs reach about 90% of adult size by nine months.

Two different things get called maturity:

  • Skeletal maturity (height, growth plates closing) is done in roughly the 12 to 18 month window. It governs when hard, high-impact exercise is safe, and it is well supported.
  • Filling out (chest, muscle, the adult outline) really does carry on toward 24 months. That is what owners are describing when they say three years.

Stretching “still filling out” into “still growing” keeps a Rottweiler on puppy food far longer than it needs. In a breed where weight during growth is the risk, that is the wrong error to make.

Across their life

The same UK records describe a whole life. This is a list to take to a check-up, not one to diagnose from.

They do not live long. Median lifespan was 9.0 years, and females outlived males, 9.5 against 8.7.

Weight and ears are the everyday ones. Overweight or obesity was recorded in 7.06% of dogs, and otitis externa (inflammation of the outer ear canal) in 6.14%. Degenerative joint disease came next, at 4.69%.

Cancer is usually what ends it. Neoplasia (abnormal new growth, which may or may not be malignant) was the recorded cause of death in 33.0% of Rottweilers. An inability to stand accounted for another 16.0%, which is the joint story arriving at its end.

Bone cancer is the breed’s signature risk, and it is still uncommon. Against the general dog population the odds ratio is 26.67, one of the highest of any breed. The share of Rottweilers in those records with bone cancer of a limb was 1.14%. Both are true. A large multiple of a small number is still small.

The bone cancer and neutering question, told properly

This is the most consequential claim attached to the breed, so it gets space rather than a verdict.

What the original study found. A historical group of 683 Rottweilers reported that dogs neutered before a year old had roughly a one in four lifetime risk of bone sarcoma, with relative risks of 3.8 for males and 3.1 for females against intact dogs. Risk fell as lifetime exposure to sex hormones rose. The association was reported as independent of adult height and weight. A later review gives the absolute figures: an “8% risk of developing osteosarcoma” in intact dogs, against “a 28% risk in males and a 25% risk in females gonadectomized before 1 year of age”.

Why it is contested. Bone cancer is a disease of older dogs. The same review notes that in that group, age at death “was actually greater … for the gonadectomized dogs”. If neutered dogs lived longer, more survived into the years when the disease shows up. That is competing-risks bias, one cause of death hiding another, and it can make an association out of nothing. The breed’s own research funding body describes the findings as having generated significant debate and as not consistently reproduced.

What happened when bigger datasets looked. The same UK study that found the 26.67 odds ratio also found that neuter status was not associated with the odds of osteosarcoma and was not retained in the final model. The 854-Rottweiler study found no rise in cancer from neutering at any age either, and body shape work in the same UK data points at size and leg length rather than hormones.

So we are reporting a real finding that has not held up. Evidence does that. Pages still presenting the 2002 result as settled are two decades behind.

Ovaries and long life

A second, stranger line of Rottweiler research is also unresolved.

Investigators assembled 119 Rottweilers that reached 13 or more, about 30% longer than the breed’s average, and compared them with 186 dogs of usual longevity. Among females, those with the longest exposure to their own ovaries, 6.1 to 8.0 years, were 3.2 times more likely to reach that age than those with the shortest. Removing the ovaries during the first four years erased the female survival advantage altogether. You will see bigger multipliers quoted for this study elsewhere; 3.2 is the figure in its own results.

The researchers were careful about what they could not explain. The benefit “could not be attributed to resistance against a particular disease or major cause of death.” And the group was assembled specifically to find long-lived purebred dogs with engaged owners, which is not a random sample of anything.

An Australian dataset of 7,185 Rottweilers points the same way. Dogs neutered before one year had expected lifespans about 1.5 years shorter for males and 1 year shorter for females. Those authors are equally careful, writing that an optimal neutering age “remains to be established and may not exist for this breed”, and pointing to the well-established benefits of neutering.

This one is genuinely open. Settle it with your own vet, about your own dog.

What we could not verify

A Rottweiler growth curve. None has been published. Every Rottweiler growth chart we examined was unsourced, and the best growth research excludes dogs over 40 kg, which is most male Rottweilers.

The “five times more likely” bone cancer figure. It is everywhere, and it conflicts badly with the primary literature, which reports odds ratios of 13.3 and 26.67 against the general dog population. It looks garbled, so we are not repeating it.

A whole-dog comparison for that 7.46% aggression figure. We wanted to tell you how it sits against dogs in general. The large UK prevalence studies do not report aggression as a disorder, so there is nothing clean to compare it with, and we are not building one out of two different datasets.

Any evidence that breed lists reduced bites. The study we found compared how bad bites were, not how many there were. We could not find a before-and-after count for any country that names this breed.

“Rottweilers are one-person dogs.” Nobody has measured it, in this breed or any other we could find. Same for “needs an experienced owner”, sensible-sounding advice about a 100 lb dog, but not a research finding.

The month-by-month table below is generated by our own model from this breed’s measured adult weights. For females it rests on research validated at that size. For males it is an extrapolation past the point where the standards stop, and we would rather say so than present both columns as equally solid.
