This breed’s page has to carry two awkward facts. Nobody has ever published a growth chart for the Bernese Mountain Dog, and this is one of the shortest-lived dogs there is. We are not going to soften either one.

How big they get

The weights in the panel above come from measuring a large group of real dogs, not from a show-ring ideal. One caveat is easy to miss. Those dogs were weighed at 12 to 24 months old, at hip screening. So they describe Bernese at around skeletal maturity (the point where the growth plates finish closing) and in the trim of a dog turned out for a health test. They are not lifetime averages.

Giant breeds finish late. The 2021 AAHA nutrition guidelines put skeletal maturity in this size group as late as 15 to 16 months, with weight still filling in after. That is general giant-breed guidance, not a Bernese finding.

Where the evidence stops, and which of your dogs it stops for

There is no published growth standard for this breed. No journal paper, no kennel-club chart, no breed-club dataset. We looked in English and in German. Every month-by-month Bernese weight chart we found carries no source and no method.

That gap is a deliberate exclusion, and knowing why tells you something about your dog.

The largest growth-standards study in dogs analysed more than six million young dogs, and its charts are still used in clinics. Its own limit is blunt: the standards “do not apply dogs with an adult weight >40 kg” (88 lb). The authors tried to build a curve for the biggest dogs and abandoned it. Those breeds, they wrote, “had widely varying growth trajectories and, consequently, it was not possible to create a growth curve model.”

Now hold the Bernese against that line. In the population study our figures come from, the least-squares mean, an average adjusted for the mix of dogs measured, was about 46.1 kg for males and 40.1 kg for females. Roughly 102 lb and 88 lb.

So a typical male sits above the exclusion, and a typical female almost exactly on it. That is why the warning near the top names the sexes rather than issuing one blanket caution.

For a female, our model rests on research validated up to roughly her adult size. For a male it is working past where the standards stop. It is still the best number going, because it uses this breed’s own measured adult weights. But nobody can point to validated growth data for a 100 lb dog. Either way, watch whether your puppy tracks its own line rather than whether it hits a number in a table.

And here is what a size calculator cannot tell you. How big this dog gets is a much smaller question than how long you get to keep it.

How long they live, and what is known about why

You will meet this fact whether we print it or not, so we would rather print it carefully.

A Swiss study traced Bernese registered in 2001 and 2002 (1,290 dogs) and built life histories for 389, nearly all of whom had died by the end. Median life expectancy was 8.4 years, meaning half lived longer and half did not. Split by sex it was 8.8 years for females and 7.7 for males.

Three other datasets agree. A Dutch study of 1,092 Bernese puts the median at 8.0 years. A UK Kennel Club survey gives age at death as 8, against 11 years and 3 months across all breeds. A US breed-club survey gives 7.9.

Four countries, all landing between 7.9 and 8.4. The figure repeated everywhere else is “6 to 8 years”, lower than every primary measurement we could open. The number is also improving: the Swiss authors note life expectancy rising from 5.7 and 6.8 years in early studies to between 7.0 and 8.0 in recent ones.

Size is part of the answer, and not the biggest part

Bigger breeds die younger. A UK study of 584,734 dogs put median survival at about 12.5 years overall and 11.9 for large breeds. This is the rare breed where you can watch that trade-off working inside one breed. The heavier sex lives about a year less.

But size is not the main story. If it were, a Bernese would live around 11.9 years like other large dogs. It lives about three and a half years less.

The missing years are cancer. Tumours were behind 58.3% of deaths in the Swiss cohort and 55.1% in the Dutch one. Nothing else is close. Degenerative joint disease accounted for 4.2% of Swiss deaths, spinal disorders 3.4%, kidney injury 3.1%, a twisted stomach 1.8%. Almost a quarter, 23.4%, had no recorded cause at all.

None of that predicts your dog, and plenty of Berners reach eleven. It describes a population, which is all a figure like this can do.

Histiocytic sarcoma, without the number that keeps getting repeated

Histiocytic sarcoma, a cancer of the scavenger cells of the immune system, is the disease most attached to this breed. The figures attached to it are often wrong.

What is well supported. Research describes the disease as occurring in 15% to 25% of Bernese Mountain Dogs over a lifetime, with one review of the breed putting the frequency at about 25%. A susceptibility marker has been mapped: a haplotype spanning the MTAP and CDKN2A genes, a block of DNA passed on as one unit, found in 96% of affected dogs on both continents. It marks raised risk, not disease, and is common in dogs that never get it.

What we will not print. A frequently cited review says these tumours contribute to “as many as 50% of deaths” in the breed. We followed that claim to the paper it cites, and those authors report 15.3% of deaths. We could not reconcile the two, so we will not repeat the higher number.

The defensible range for deaths from this cancer runs from about 6% to about 15%. The 6% is the Swiss cohort, whose authors warn that many tumour deaths were never confirmed under a microscope, so it is likely an undercount. The 15% is the Dutch figure, put by its authors as “over 1/7 of all Bernese mountain dogs”. Deaths are a different quantity from lifetime risk. Mixing the two is how “half of all Bernese die of this” got about.

What they will actually be like

People choose this breed for its reputation rather than its looks, so the temperament question deserves a straight answer. It begins with a caution that applies to every breed description, this one included.

A 2022 study surveyed 18,385 dogs and genotyped 2,155 of them. Breed explained only about 9% of the behaviour differences between one dog and another. Breed, the authors wrote, “is not, contrary to popular belief, informative enough to predict an individual’s disposition.” Nine percent is the honest size of the promise a breed name can make.

Where Berners have been measured, they measure well. In a survey across dozens of breeds they came out among the least aggressive toward both people and other dogs. Only 67 Bernese were in it, all from the online arm rather than the breed-club arm. A latent class analysis, a method that sorts individuals into hidden groups, ran on 57,454 dogs. Of the Bernese, the authors wrote that “the ‘Calm’ group being the most representative for these breeds.”

The finding that cuts the other way

The awkward one belongs here too. In the UK Kennel Club survey, behaviour was the reason given for 2.5% of Bernese deaths against 1.3% across all breeds, with aggression heading that category. The breed club’s own summary does not flinch: “behaviour is without a doubt the most worrying category in the whole survey.”

Hold it loosely. It is ten dogs, and it counts euthanasia decisions rather than behaviour. But it is a real number, and a page printing only the flattering one would not be worth reading.

Growing up

The months when they stop listening

Somewhere around eight months, your Berner may quietly stop taking your word for things. That is a documented pattern, not a training failure. Two hundred and eighty-five young guide dogs were scored by the people raising them. Trainability ratings dropped between 5 and 8 months, as puberty arrived. The odd detail is that the drop was personal: the same dogs were rated better at 8 months by trainers who knew them less well.

Owner complaints follow a similar shape. A UK cohort of over a thousand puppies peaked at the 12-month survey, where 42.1% of owners had something to report, then eased off.

No Bernese were in either study. What the timing means here is that the hard months land while a giant breed is still building bone and already heavy on soft joints.

Growth is the part you can actually influence

The controlled evidence was generated in Labradors rather than Berners, and no study has tested growth management in this breed at all. What the Labrador trial did was pair siblings from eight weeks old and feed one of each pair 25% less. Hip dysplasia at two years: 7 of the 24 on the smaller ration, 16 of the 24 on the larger. Hip arthritis came far later in the leaner half, at a median of twelve years against six, and those dogs reached 13.0 years against 11.2.

Read that comparison carefully, because it is routinely garbled. The smaller ration was 25% below what the other dogs ate when allowed to eat freely. It was not 25% below a recommended amount. The finding is about not overfeeding, and we take it apart in rapid growth and joint problems.

Two more points at this size. Calcium during growth has a ceiling rather than a target, which is what large-breed puppy food is for. And the first three months matter most. In a Norwegian cohort of 501 puppies from four large and giant breeds, daily stair use before three months roughly doubled the odds of hip dysplasia on X-ray. Daily off-lead exercise on soft, uneven ground cut them. After three months, no exercise link at all.

Neutering is a conversation to have with your vet, and the guidance for this breed is unusually cautious. In a study of 235 Bernese, neutering males before two years went with joint disorders in 23 to 24% of them, against 4% of males left intact. The suggested guideline is to wait “until well-beyond 2 years.”

Across their life

What follows is a checklist for the consulting room, not a diagnostic tool. Each item is something worth mentioning to a vet who may not see many Berners.

Elbows are the signature problem, and selection helps less here. In a Dutch screening study, a fragmented medial coronoid process, a small piece of bone breaking away inside the elbow, was found in 15% of Bernese, against 6% in Labradors and 5% in Golden Retrievers. The heritability figures should give breeders pause. Heritability means how much of the difference between dogs comes from their genes. It was 0.17 and 0.24 in the retrievers, but only 0.06 in the Bernese. Those retriever figures, the authors wrote, “were high enough to warrant including FCP findings in the breeding policy”, pointedly not saying the same for the Bernese. Screening selects more weakly against this trait here.

The breed also ranks in the top five for elbow dysplasia across the whole North American screening database, and the US breed club’s own survey found elbow abnormalities in 24.5% of evaluated dogs against hip dysplasia in 14%. Published estimates run anywhere from 20 to 50%, which is a lesson in who got counted.

Hips are improving. Swiss records for 3,381 screened Bernese show hip dysplasia in 15.7% overall, falling from 21.2% in 1995–1999 to 12.5% in 2010–2016. Only 22.8% of registered puppies were ever screened.

A damaged joint here is not only a joint problem. In a study of 920 European Bernese, dogs with earlier joint disease had an odds ratio of 5.4 for developing histiocytic sarcoma alongside a joint, about five and a half times the odds. The tumour appeared in the previously damaged joint, a median of 1.9 years later. Fifteen of 226 dogs with joint disease developed it, against nine of 694 without.

This is observational. It cannot separate “joint damage promotes a tumour” from “an early tumour first showed up as joint disease.” But it is why protecting a Bernese puppy’s elbows is not only about mobility at ten. It connects, statistically, to the cancer that defines the breed.

Kidneys deserve a mention nobody gives them. A German study checked bloodwork and urine in 197 Bernese and 57 control dogs. Laboratory evidence of kidney disease showed up in 17.8% of the Bernese against 1.8% of controls, and protein leaking into the urine in 14.3% against 1.8%. Most affected dogs were male.

The same Bernese carried far more antibodies to tick-borne infections: 44.6% for Borrelia burgdorferi, the Lyme disease bacterium, against 21.1% of controls. An earlier Swiss study found 58% of 160 Bernese positive against 15% of 62 controls, and would go no further than “a breed predisposition can be suspected.” The tempting conclusion is that ticks explain the kidneys. The German authors checked and could not link the two.

What we could not verify

Bernese puppy weight charts. Not one of the month-by-month tables in circulation names a source. The serious growth research works in size groups and stops below this size. Our own table is a model output, not a record of what real Bernese puppies weighed, because that record does not exist.

That keeping a Bernese lean will lengthen its life. Likely, and we would do it anyway. But the lifespan gain was measured in Labradors, and what shortens Bernese lives is cancer rather than arthritis.

“Berners can’t handle heat.” Plausible, and not in the breed data. The largest UK study of heat-related illness covered 905,543 dogs without analysing this breed. It does show that dogs over 50 kg had 3.42 times the odds of heat illness compared with dogs under 10 kg. That is a size finding, not a breed one.

Anything about children. No study we found scores any breed on how it does with children. The trait is not defined well enough to measure, here or elsewhere.

Why the cancer burden exists. It explains most of the missing years. What explains it, past the susceptibility marker already mapped, is not settled.

Exercise amounts. Nobody has measured how much exercise this breed needs. The daily minute counts you will be given trace back to nothing we could open, and the one exercise finding we do trust covers a puppy’s first three months in other breeds entirely.
