Start with the awkward part. The American Kennel Club only recognised this breed in 2010, and most of the research this site normally leans on was designed before that. So there is no primary-care study of the Cane Corso, no growth data, and no published behaviour score. Rather than fill those holes with generic big-dog advice, this page names them and spends its space on what has genuinely been measured, mostly in France, Italy and the UK.
The size question, and two different 40 kg lines
The weights in the panel come from Swedish screening records, published as a study of 115,000 young adult dogs across 72 breeds. For this breed it weighed 281 males and 378 females. They were on the table for a hip X-ray at 12 to 24 months old, which means the figures describe a young adult in working trim, not an average across a whole life.
Now hold those against the breed standard, because they disagree in an interesting place.
The FCI standard asks for males of 45 to 50 kg and females of 40 to 45 kg. The measured males come in at 47.7 kg, comfortably inside. The measured females come in at 38.8 kg, which is below the standard’s own floor. That is an average, so plenty of real females are lighter still. The American standard sidesteps the argument by giving no weight at all, only heights, and asking for weight “proportionate to height”.
The second 40 kg is a research boundary
The largest published growth standards say flatly that they “do not apply dogs with an adult weight >40 kg.” Same number, entirely different meaning.
So the average female sits on a strange piece of ground. She is too light for the breed standard and just light enough for the growth research. The average male is comfortably past it, which is why the caution above the panel singles out the males. His projected weights are a curve stretched beyond the last dog anyone checked it against.
Neither point is a criticism of your dog. Both are about which number on this page to hold loosely.
Height stops before the dog looks finished
The 2021 AAHA nutrition guidelines put skeletal maturity in the biggest breeds as late as 15 to 16 months. Chest, neck and muscle keep changing after that. Owners read the second part as growth and keep feeding for it, which is the expensive mistake in a breed this heavy.
What we can and cannot tell you about temperament
This is the question people actually arrive with, and it is the one where this page has least to offer. Better said out loud than papered over.
How much a breed name is worth
A 2022 study matched 18,385 owner surveys against DNA from 2,155 dogs. Breed accounted for roughly 9% of the behaviour difference between one dog and another. The authors put it plainly: breed “is not, contrary to popular belief, informative enough to predict an individual’s disposition.”
Nine percent is a real effect and a small one. It caps what any paragraph about any breed can promise you, including the flattering ones.
The survey everyone quotes does not contain this breed
The standard reference for breed-level aggression is a C-BARQ study, a validated owner questionnaire, covering 11 breeds recruited through breed clubs and 33 recruited online, the online ones needing at least 45 dogs each. We read both tables in full. The Cane Corso is in neither.
That is not a snub. The data were gathered while the breed was still outside the AKC studbook and thin on the ground in the United States. But the consequence is concrete: when a page ranks this breed for aggression, it is not reading that paper, because that paper has no row to read.
We looked for a replacement in Italian and European work and did not find one. No published dataset we could open reports a temperament or aggression score for Cane Corsos as a group.
What the standard says is a wish, not a finding
Breed standards are written by breed clubs, and they describe an intention. The AKC one says the dog is “docile and affectionate to his owner, loving with children and family,” and calls him “unequaled” as a protector of property. Both halves of that are claims. Neither has been tested.
We say the same about the opposite claim. “Needs an experienced owner” is plausible advice about a 105 lb guarding dog and it is not a research finding either.
One population fact the records do give up
Here is something specific to this breed that has been counted. Ear cropping is illegal in the UK, and the AKC standard permits it: ears “may be cropped or uncropped.”
A study of UK veterinary records covering around 500 practices from 2015 to 2022 picked out 132 dogs with cropped ears, peaking in 2021. Guarding breeds were over-represented and the Italian Mastiff, the Cane Corso, was one of them. Most of the cropped dogs showed signs of having been imported.
It is a small count, and it describes a trade rather than a temperament. But it is a true thing about how some of these dogs reach their owners, which is more than any survey of the dogs offers.
The first two years
Weight is the lever you actually hold
The controlled evidence here was produced in Labradors, and nobody has repeated it in this breed. What the original trial did was take 48 puppies as 24 littermate pairs and give one of each pair 25% less food than the other ate. By two years, hip dysplasia had appeared in 7 of the 24 lean dogs and 16 of the 24 fed freely. Hip arthritis arrived much later in the lean group, at a median of twelve years against six.
The comparison is routinely mangled, so be precise about it. The smaller ration was 25% below what the other puppies chose to eat, not 25% below a recommendation. It is evidence against overfeeding, not for underfeeding, and we unpack it in rapid growth and joint problems.
The hip figures further down are why that borrowed finding is worth acting on.
Two more things at this size. Calcium in a growing giant has a ceiling rather than a target, which is the whole point of large-breed puppy food. And the earliest months seem to matter most. A Norwegian cohort of 501 puppies from four large and giant breeds found that daily stair use before three months old roughly doubled the odds of dysplastic hips on X-ray. Daily off-lead exercise in a park lowered them. After three months the exercise link disappeared. Those four breeds did not include this one.
The months when a big dog gets difficult
Adolescence is a documented dip rather than a change of character. Carers scored 285 guide dogs in training on a questionnaire at 5, 8 and 12 months, and rated them less trainable at 8 than at 5, as puberty landed. The strange part is that it was personal: the same dogs were rated better over those months by the trainers who knew them less well.
A UK puppy cohort shows the same shape from the owner’s side. Reports of at least one unwanted behaviour peaked at the 12-month survey, in 42.1% of dogs, 513 of 1,219, and eased after.
Be careful how you take those two. The guide dogs were retrievers and German shepherds, so no Cane Corso there. The puppy cohort never records breed at all, so it may contain one and we would not know. What changes at this size is only the stakes: the difficult months arrive in a dog that already outweighs its owner’s ability to simply pick it up.
Neutering age: the usual guidance skips this breed
Owners of guarding breeds get told to wait. The paper behind most of that advice covers 35 breeds, and we read the list to be sure. The Cane Corso is not one of them. So there is no breed-specific figure to bring your vet: any age you are quoted has been carried over from a different dog.
Joints, eyes and the length of a life
Everything below belongs in a conversation with a vet, not in a diagnosis.
Hips are the headline, and the number is high
French national screening records give the clearest picture anyone has. A study of 27,710 dogs across ten breeds from 1997 to 2017 graded hips on the FCI scale, where A and B are normal and C, D and E mean mild, moderate and severe dysplasia.
Of 1,338 Cane Corsos, 51.9% were graded C, D or E, the highest figure of the ten breeds, against 5% in the Siberian Husky at the other end.
Two things stop that number meaning what it looks like it means.
First, it counts X-ray grades, not limping dogs. A grade C hip is a shape on a film. Plenty of dogs carrying one never show a clinical sign, and the study measured no symptoms at all.
Second, it is moving. Prevalence in this breed fell from 72.7% in 1997–2003 to 49.9% in 2011–2017, which the authors call the largest improvement of any breed they looked at.
The bias runs the way you might not expect. Screening figures usually understate a problem, because owners of a visibly bad dog often never send the films. One study measured that: of 93 dogs X-rayed for a registry, only 49 sets of films were actually submitted, and normal ones were 8.2 times as likely to be sent in as abnormal ones. The French authors make the same point about their own data, writing that the true prevalence “could be higher” than the screened figure.
Elbows are the smaller problem here
That is unusual in a heavy guarding breed, and worth knowing so you ask about both rather than assuming.
The French screening database holds elbow readings too. Examiners read 17,861 elbow records across 13 breeds between 2002 and 2022. Overall elbow dysplasia ran at 11.4%. By breed:

So this breed sits fourth of thirteen: above average, well below the worst. Across the whole study males were affected more than females, 17.5% against 10.5%. Ask a breeder for both readings, and expect the same submission bias to apply here.
Eyelids are a real breed problem
Two datasets, from different angles.
An Italian clinic series examined 605 dogs of three large Italian breeds between 1992 and 2012 and found at least one presumed-inherited eye disorder in 351 of them, 58%. Among the Cane Corsos, 57.7% had one, giving 2.5 times the odds of the Maremma Sheepdog after adjustment. The commonest one in this breed was ectropion, a lower lid that sags away from the eye. The Neapolitan Mastiff was far worse again, at 92.1%.
Read that with care. These were dogs at an ophthalmology service, many of them presented healthy for breeding checks. Wiley would not open for us, so we are working from the abstract, and the abstract never says how many of the 605 were Corsos. Tellingly, the rate was higher in the presumed-healthy dogs, 62.2%, than in those presented for an ophthalmic examination, 53.8%, which tells you these are mostly findings, not illnesses.
The second dataset is a whole-population one. A UK study of 905,543 dogs looked at the gland behind the third eyelid slipping out of place, cherry eye. It affected 1,802 dogs overall, 0.20%. Among Cane Corsos it affected 13 of 388, or 3.35%, and after adjustment the breed carried 14.66 times the odds of a crossbred dog, with a confidence interval from 8.18 to 26.28. Two breeds in that list scored higher: the Neapolitan Mastiff at 34.26 and the English Bulldog at 24.08.
The useful detail is timing. Across the whole study the median age at first diagnosis was 0.63 years, and dogs under one had 10.82 times the odds of dogs aged two to four. If it happens, it usually happens in the puppy.
How long they live
Two datasets, and they do not quite agree.
A study of 584,734 UK dogs put median survival for this breed at 8.1 years, against 12.5 years for dogs overall and 12.0 for crossbreds. Its hazard ratio against crossbreds was 2.4, with an interval of 2.0 to 3.0, about two and a half times the rate of dying at any given age. Two breeds named alongside it came in shorter still: the Caucasian Shepherd Dog at 5.4 years and the Presa Canario at 7.7.
A second dataset, 232 Cane Corsos supplied by kennels and owners across 25 countries, gives a median of 9.29 years. Males and females were the same within noise, 9.25 and 9.33.
We would not average those. The UK figure comes from veterinary records with no volunteering involved; the 232 came from people engaged enough to fill in a survey about a dog that had died, which usually pushes a number up. Somewhere between eight and nine and a half is the honest answer, and both ends of that are short.
Tumours: real signal, very wide intervals
The Swiss Canine Cancer Registry recorded 54,986 tumours in 42,743 dogs between 2008 and 2020, an overall rate of 775 per 100,000 dog-years at risk. This breed shows up twice.
For haemangiosarcoma, a cancer of blood-vessel lining, the Cane Corso rate was 101 per 100,000 dog-years, with an interval of 46 to 193. For glioma, a brain tumour, it was 34, with an interval running from 7 all the way to 99. The Bearded Collie’s glioma rate in the same table was 91.
Those intervals are the finding as much as the rates are. They are that wide because very few Swiss Cane Corsos were in the registry. The glioma signal is worth knowing if your dog ever has a seizure, because it argues for imaging rather than assuming epilepsy. It is not worth quoting as a number.
One inherited syndrome that has a name and a test
Researchers describing dental-skeletal-retinal anomaly, or DSRA, traced it to a splice defect in the MIA3 gene, a fault in how a gene’s message gets assembled. Affected dogs get brittle, translucent teeth, disproportionate growth and retinal degeneration that takes their sight. It is recessive, meaning a puppy needs the fault from both parents, and genotypes matched the condition exactly across 18 affected and 22 unaffected Cane Corsos.
That is a short, clean answer to a question you can put to a breeder: both parents tested. It is the most actionable item on this page.
Bloat, and why we cannot give you a breed figure
Gastric dilatation-volvulus, the stomach twisting on itself, is the emergency every deep-chested breed’s owner should recognise. The most-cited risk-factor study followed 1,637 dogs of 11 large and giant breeds. We read that list. The Cane Corso is not on it, so nothing below is breed-specific.
What it found generally: 6% of those dogs developed the condition over the study, and the risks that mattered were older age, a first-degree relative that had had it, eating fast and a raised feeding bowl. Raised bowls were blamed for about 20% of cases in the large breeds and about 52% in the giant ones. Which argues, cheaply, for a bowl on the floor.
What nobody has measured
A growth chart for this breed. Every month-by-month Cane Corso weight table we found names no source. The table below is our own model run on this breed’s measured adult weights, which is the most defensible thing we can offer and is still a model, not a record of real puppies.
Anything at all about the temperament. No aggression score, no fear score, no trainability score. The breed is missing from the survey the field relies on and we could not find a European substitute.
A bite rate. It cannot be calculated. A rate needs a count of how many Cane Corsos exist in a place, and no country keeps one. Reports also misname breeds often enough that the numerator is unreliable too. We would rather print nothing than a ranking built on both problems.
“Mature at three.” No source. The veterinary guidance says skeletal maturity lands closer to 15 to 16 months in the largest breeds, with bulk filling in after. Stretching that into three years of growth food is how a dog ends up heavy during the years its hips are forming.
A daily exercise figure. Nobody has measured what this breed needs. The one exercise finding we trust concerns a puppy’s first three months and was generated in other breeds.
How common DSRA actually is. The paper that identified it studied 40 dogs and reported no carrier rate for the wider population. So “both parents tested” is good advice, and we cannot tell you what fraction of the breed carries it.
The longevity DNA panel. A follow-up study compared 20 Cane Corsos that passed twelve years with 20 aged two to nine and flagged four genes. If you are offered a longevity test for this breed, that is what it rests on. The authors themselves say the dataset “was quite small” and ask for confirmation in a longitudinal study before the markers are used for breeding. We agree with them.
The ear-cropping paper’s finer numbers. The publisher blocked our fetcher. We took the count and the breed list from the research group’s own institutional summary and have kept to the figures both accounts agree on.
Whether this is the fastest-climbing breed in the top 25. The climb is real and documented: the AKC had this breed 25th in 2020 and 11th in 2025, noting it rose “from No. 14 in 2024 to No. 11 to 2025”. We could not find a published ranking of which breed climbed fastest, so we are reporting the trajectory and not the superlative.
